Exterior renovation on semi, do we have to copy neighbours?

Just that really, we are about to renovate our semi detached house. Ours neighbours are in the process of doing theirs but we don't like the render colour they have used.

It got me thinking, what are the do's and dont's when renovating a semi? We want to give our house its own identity but don't want to make it unsellable in the future should that situation ever arise.

Anyone able to offer advice?

Unless you are in one of those streets (like one in Brighton in the one way system) where all the little terraced houses are different colours, similar to beach huts colours, it is usually best to blend in with the neighbours.

Moss green, dark terracotta, mustard, deep pink etc. are a bit off-putting when all the others are cream or white. In the days before plastic window frames people were able to choose their colours, sadly these days they are either 80's brown or 90's onwards white.

I wouldn't buy one of the houses that are painted in battleship grey which seems to be the current unfortunate trend. It looks so gloomy and miserable. I know I would only see it when I was outside but they make the road look dingy.
