West Byfleet or Hersham/Walton on Thames?

I'm looking at the moment for a family friendly 3-4 bed that will do us (me, dh, dd3 and hopefully one other in future) for the foreseeable future. We've focused our search around Hersham/Walton on Thames following v helpful suggestions on a previous thread I posted www.mumsnet.com/Talk/property/2855612-Any-other-towns-in-Surrey-Kent-within-this-budget We've found a house in Hersham we really like but have also seen a few arguably better (bigger and closer to station) in West Byfleet. On paper I'm tempted by WB - good facilities and schools) but don't know it at all. Any views on how they compare?

West Byfleet.

JeffyJeffington · 08/07/2017 19:53

Thanks Surrey - anymore detail on why WB wins though?

Well, let;s just say, I'm Surrey-born & bred & I wouldn't buy in Hersham whereas WB is well worth considering. A far nicer area.

Hersham has a couple of good roads but mostly not great.

unikorn · 09/07/2017 06:44

I'm in Surrey. My kids go to one of the big independents near walton. Don't go to hersham. Have you considered claygate/esher?

JemandScout · 09/07/2017 07:09

Out of those I would say West Byfleet. Or as an alternative, how about New Malden?

JemandScout · 09/07/2017 07:16

this is good [[http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-66642455.html]] a bit over budget but they might take an offer.

JemandScout · 09/07/2017 07:23

I don't know WB well but can tell you NM has faster trains, is closer to London for shorter travel times, a decent sized town, good schools and easy access to the A3.

cece · 09/07/2017 07:26

West Byfleet - the schools all decent.
There is a Waitrose. Not really any pubs - it is a quaker town or so I have been told. I live on outskirts and it is nice here.

For £650k I think you'd get a nicer house in WB. Hersham is lovely but quite claustrophobic and not much space. Walton has great facilities, restaurants, shops, cinema and depending where you are good schools. But it is a town whereas I think WB has a more village and spacious feel.
I don't know about he schools in WB.
Ryden's in Walton/Hersham is having massive investment so whilst considered not great at the mo, is expected to be fabulous in a few years.

Right then, action stations. Am heading into West Byfleet now to check it out properly- have already viewed a couple of nice houses which may go back for second viewings. New Malden is great but can't seem to get off street parking for our budget which unfortunately rules it out. We do want a town rather than a village so have ruled out villages surrounding Woking. Thanks v much for all suggestions.

I'd choose WB because it's closer to Woking for shopping and restaurants, and better trains to London.

unikorn · 09/07/2017 11:12

Surbiton!!

JeffyJeffington · 09/07/2017 11:13

When I went to Woking (admittedly just for a few hours!) it seemed like it had the same chain-type restaurants that walton had?

Okay, I meant that they're better than what West Byfleet has to offer (though they do have a Harvester, granted). I haven't been to Walton for about three years but I used to work there and lived in nearby Weybridge and then Addlestone. I still think WB/Woking would be better for a family.

fairgroundsnack · 09/07/2017 14:01

West Byfleet definitely! Get more for your money, easy access to lovely countryside, great train service to London, great schools.

JeffyJeffington · 09/07/2017 18:32

So after today's visit am starting to see why people rate it and we're going to seriously consider some houses in West Byfleet. Thanks v much all for advice!

I’m not sure anyone will find this but just to update - we moved to WB! To a really lovely house and we’re so happy here. Really grateful for the advice on this thread which helped us to make the right decision Smile

That was quick - hopefully painless - well done!

Hi just reopening this thread, is all still going well in West Byfleet Jeffry? We are moving into the area, have looked at Weybridge, Walton and Hersham, Hersham is the favourite so far because of schools. Wanted to ask again about West Byfleet and Hersham. Hersham has a large green and nice village feel, more amenities, more choice of primary schools than West Byfleet? I have seen the not so nice roads in Hersham but does WB not also have roads that aren’t so nice? Interested to look into West Byfleet a bit more now as it seems to be preferred over Hersham. We have done LOTS of ground research and visits to the area but it would be great to hear from locals. Thanks!

alifelessordinary · 30/06/2019 09:44

@Katrina79 have you looked at Shepperton? Just down the road from walton and hersham. We moved here 3 months ago and love it! Lovely little high street lots of green space with a village feel and really good schools. Let me know if you need any more info.

TheLime · 30/06/2019 21:05

Pyrford has outstanding schools and a lovely green feel. Just adjacent to WB.
