Where is 'the new Didsbury'? Preferably south of the centre...

We are moving to Manchester (renting) and loved the vibe of Didsbury high street... unfortunately it seems so does the rest of the world! Very £££

Can any Mancunian MNers please recommend other areas that might have a similar(-ish) feel? Ideally south of Manchester rather that the north, so as to have good access onto the M56.

Thank you Smile Thanks

Davenport, Cheadle, Gatley? I mean they are not Didsbury, but may be worth a look.

Not south Manchester but we are buying a house in prestwich at the moment. High street area is really improving. We lived in west Didsbury about 5 years ago but don't feel it's worth the current prices

A lot of my friends are buying in the heatons at the moment, close to m60 so not bad for m56 either.

We're in Chorlton, which is nice, but not significantly cheaper than Didsbury. Some of our friends who have been priced out of Chorlton are in Stretford and Urmston, both of which I could happily live in. Or Northenden, which I probably wouldn't.

Did you like Didsbury village or west Didsbury (Burton road)?

tearsbeforefears · 04/07/2017 22:33

Thank you all for the tips Smile

We liked Didsbury village itself - specifically the cafes, the speciality cheese shop(!), the good bus/train connections, and just the vibe of it, it felt like it's somewhere we could take friends and family when they come to visit. Obviously it's quite an aspirational area and this is reflected in the high rents in the area!

Actually we did also like the feel of Heaton Moor @firsttimer12345 so good thinking! Smile

Have you looked at Altrincham? Lots going on, perhaps less "hip" than Didsbury but great vibe. Hale too but as expensive or more so than Didsbury. As pp has suggested, the Heatons are popular with people moving out of places like Didsbury / Chorlton. Parts of Stretford are nice although no real sort of high street, Urmston has a centre but I wouldn't really call it hip (yet - I think there are plans to try to copy Altrincham market there but in a smaller scale) but a nice residential area.

Watching with interest - my partner and I might be moving to Manchester later this year.

Move2yorkshire - my partner wants to live in North Manchester, can you tell me more about Prestwich? It's been on my list of top 3 but would be great to get your views on it!

Move2yorkshire · 05/07/2017 16:54

FatBottomedGal- we decided on prestwich as we have recently moved back to Manchester and decided the areas of south Manchester we previously lived in are no longer worth the prices. Prestwich has great transport to the city centre by car, bus or tram. Plus there are some nice restaurants and an m&s simply food. It really seems like an area that's improving
