old property - originally 1930's, done up in 1950's how do you know if you have asbestos? Can you get someone from somewhere out to check? Then if you have it - how do you get rid? does it cost £££

You can take samples and send them off for analysis yourself, it's not expensive. However, you have to make sure you wear full mask/suit/boot covers. You can also get rid of it yourself this way, but you need to book it in with the local recycling/waste place as they'll open up a container for you to take it into (again, full PPE required!). We had several areas of it in our renovation, in areas that would have been damp (old bathroom and a partially underground wall) and got rid of it ourselves. It isn't difficult to identify visually once you've seen it a couple of times, there is probably a guide online.

Specialist firms will test, and remove. You'll find local companies on line or in Yellow Pages. Unless your in deepest countryside.
Cost depends on type of asbestos and how extensive it is.
