Anyone know how to fix a light switch like this (pic attached)? It's been wobbling about for a few days but now it's definitely given up the ghost and I can't turn the bloody light on!!
Is it the sort of thing I can fix myself or do I need to get an electrician? How do I even get the plate off? It has no screws!!!

Can't you just leave the door open?

CherieBabySpliffUp · 12/06/2017 22:31

In the short term you can turn your phone into a lantern by putting a bottle of water on the flash

ferriswheel · 12/06/2017 22:32

A candle? What do you mean about the water pp?

MummyPigLovesAppleSauce · 13/06/2017 08:19

Thanks for your replies. Managed to have a shower via candle light!
Does anyone know how I'd go about fixing it though? Is it a bit job or something I can do with a bit of research? Bit of a diy novice but I'm sure I could do it, if it's something that can be done.

It is either a very old switch, or it is a modern fake pretending to be old. You may be able to tell by the age of the house.

If it is an old one, and you are not experienced in electrical repairs, it would be safest to get a qualified electrician in. Find a local one on www.niceic.com/find-a-contractor/find-contractors or one of the other Competent Person registers (advertising websites such as Check a Recommended are not registers)

It is in a bathroom, and it is metal, so it must be earthed. Older houses often have no earthing on lighting circuits. If it's an old one, the front plate will probably fall off if you undo the knurled rings, and there may be old porcelain and brass switches behind.

It might be one of these

however I can't see installation instructions. try emailing the maker. If it is worn out or broken I think you will have to replace with new.

I'd call an electrician

MummyPigLovesAppleSauce · 13/06/2017 16:04

Thanks PigletJohn, I'm pretty sure it's a fake old one as it's in very good condition (apart from being broken!)
I'll email the company.
