Please tell me if my plan to move will work or if I'm being a numpty!

I need to get some perspective and would like some outside opinions please!

DH and I have been dithering for a while about moving closer to my family and have now decided just to go for it. We have 2 DC and the eldest will start school in 2018 so it would be nice to be in place for school applications.

We have a house to sell in the South East, just getting final things ready to go on the market - agent seems confident it will sell if priced correctly. I have a second interview for a job in the new location next week, DH can commute. My parents have offered to help us out with rent if we move to rented initially.

So my plan is: put the house on the market, give 3 months notice at my current job, to move at the end of that into rented in new location with any crossover period before current house sells covered by my parents paying rent.

We'll then be in a good position to move quickly if a house comes on the market in our (very small) desired location.

Am I daft to try this?!

Nope. Sounds like a well thought out plan. Good luck Smile

That's what we more or less did, only we had to move to tie in with the start of the new school term!

House in SE sold fairly quickly we bought and renovated up north whilst still in the 6 month rented. We did end up offering and being accepted on the new property as we moved location.

Thank you! I was expecting lots of 'don't be daft' responses Smile

That's a really good plan as it gives you time to get to know the new area and work out where you really want to be.
Good luck!

Could give you significant advantage in property transactions. Selling and buying chain free.
Go for it

Rentals are usually minimum 6 months. Are your finances OK with that?

Are the practicalities:
notice period: Jun, Jly, Aug
rental: Sep-Mar

Application deadline is 15th Jan 2018. You need to be sure that houses rented and bought are in same catchment.
Double check LA's rules about applying from rented properties, changes of address, etc (don't assume anything).

senua I hadn't considered changes of address so I'll look into that tomorrow. We are hoping to rent and buy in the same catchment if all goes to plan.

Thank you all for responding!
