Would it be possible/very awkward to fit trellis to this kind of fence?

It's a double skinned fence (I think that's what it's called). I have my side and neighbour has exactly the same on their side. the fence boards over lap slightly so you can't see through the gaps. The boards on both sides are fitted to one middle line of fence posts. The gap between the top of mine and the top of theirs is big enough for my cat to lie in (this is a standard form of measurement, right?)

I hope I have put enough information there. I want to put some trellis along the top for added privacy but I suspect it will be tricky to do without having access to neighbour's garden which isn't an option.

Has anyone done this on a similar kind of fence?

I saw a house with a beautiful garden at the weekend and they had put freestanding trellis in front of the high dividing wall with about a foot space. Would make maintaining the back of trellis easier without bothering neighbour.

Yeah, the 'cat width' , that's what we normally use.

Trellis topping my fence was resting on top of fence, but fixed to uprights. I don't see why you couldn't screw timber to your side, long enough that it stuck up in the air the height of the trellis, and then screw/nail the trellis to the uprights.

Obviously, the major disadvantage is that it will be in the cat's way. Are you sure you want to be there when the cat discovers you've trelissed off their fence lounger?

i would prefer to have something fixed to the fence if possible claudia, the garden is small and DCs are constantly kicking balls around, I suspect I would be forever shouting at them to mind the trellis if it was free standing.

The cat is inspiring fits of rage in the neighbour so I'm hoping the trellis will also keep him out of the fence.
