Help with kitchen cabinets. Looking to immitate deVOL.

I'm looking to imitate a deVOL kitchen but can't afford one
I've looked at DIY kitchens Norton range but the lay-on frame is 10cm, a lot chunkier than deVOL. Has anyone seen any kitchens with a slimmer onlay frame above no V groove (so the frame is flush with no gaps)? I dint want in-frame. Thanks so much!

That should say 'with no V-groove'

I think John Ladbury in Welham Green do that style - but not sure it would be much cheaper as their quality is top notch too ! But worth a try !

Contact a kitchen company and ask them to quote you for making similar cabinets

We used Handmade Kitchens Direct, highly recommend.

Where are you located?
I'm in the industry and could recommend a few specialist cabinet makers who would produce the same style

Some of the Ikea doors do have the groove between the edge boards but they have slimmer edges. I know what you mean though. Everywhere has versions of the same thing.

Schuller kitchens (and other continental brands possibly) do a CASA range which is a slim framed Shaker, they do have some more traditional styles. here

We've just had a Handmade Kitchens Direct fitted and I'd second the recommendation. The quality of the units is great and the units are all bespoke sizes so maximised space in our kitchen. Good value for money too but you do have to factor in painting and fitting costs plus handles.

Also you could look at Keller kitchens, they have a very wide range.

The SN Mornington kitchen has internal beading which we don't want but will have a look at other SN kitchens thanks although I think DIY do SN too?
We don't want a wrapped style etc door so that rules out IKEA & Schuller.
We are in hertfordshire.
The rail size on in-frame kitchens is ideal but we don't want an in-frame kitchen. Typical!

I don't think those brands are all wrapped are they? Maybe the cheaper styles.

Another option is to get MDF doors but you would need to get them sprayed. There is a company CJF trading, we got Shaker wardrobe doors from them, IIRC the rail is about 3 inches.

What's a wrapped style?

Also have you looked at John Lewis of Hungerford (once on their mailing list you never get off it!) but they do Shaker in-frame or lay-on and looks like they use the same template for both.

Forgot to mention we've had a quote already from Classic Kitchens for £17k & a quote from Handmade Kitchens for £24k which is more than what we want to pay & does not include worktop or any appliances.

Wrapped doors are where they have been wrapped in vinyl or Vinyl or foil which can peel. We have them now in our current kitchen (Inherited) & they are peeling by the fridge & oven.

We looked at Schuller & the doors we saw were not painted wood. They looked like they were smooth moulded without the clean edges that a usual shaker design brings.

We are impressed with DIY but it's just their rails on lay-on kitchens are rather chunky. Shame really as am sure a lot of people are wanting to imitate deVOL & Plain English. Would be ideal if they made the Norton range rails slimmer as there is no V-groove too.

HomeExtender was your quote from Handmade Kitchens during their sale? We got all our units for a pretty big kitchen (including 2 large larders and and a 2x1.5m island) for under £10k.

It does add up with appliances/worktops though.

We just finished our kitchen with Devol as the inspiration (but also not going for in frame). We used IKEA cabinets which were recommended by a couple of interior designer friends who swear by the quality. They were super affordable. Then we had custom shaker doors in Tulip wood made by www.shakerdoors.co.uk and sprayed in colour matched Farrow and Ball. We were blown away by the quality, and so is everyone who sees out kitchen! It looks super expensive but was quite affordable. Also the doors actually look far better than any of the photos they have on their website, at least ours do!

Gerbita I'm interested in the shaker doors you recommended and have also been considering IKEA units. Painted Tulip wood sounds like a great option. But what do the interiors of the IKEA cupboards and drawers look like? Does it spoil the effect a bit? We have only about 5-7k to spend on a new kitchen and also want to replicate the deVol/Plain English look! We have been considering the Norton from DIY Kitchens but there's something about it that doesn't look quite right. OP could you explain your concerns with the rail (what does that mean) - and also why you don't want in frame? We are just starting this process so not so clued up as you all. Thanks!

Ah, ok. As pp has said, almost certain not all doors from Ikea are wrapped. For instance they do veneer as well. Looking at the catalogue there are "fibre board with painted finish" doors, as well as "particleboard with melamine finish" (ignoring anything which says foil finish) in addition to the veneer options.

Purveyor of beautiful but pricey kitchens

When you open the pantry door, sure you can tell it's Ikea if you know your cupboards but you are only ever looking at the inside of a cupboard fleetingly. Inside the pan drawers looks very nice however as there are none of the groove holes for the different shelf heights. What's great about Ikea is the quality of the mechanisms and the different options you can have. We had a similar budget to yours for cabinets and I am a bit of design snob so we almost splashed out on British Standard but we realised we were paying over the odds for something we didn't really need. We have a large galley layout kitchen in a Victorian terrace with two rows of floor cupboards either side. We have four pan drawers on either side of a 90cm range cooker, an under sink cabinet for double belfast sink, two large cupboards, integrated dishwasher, integrated full height fridge, full height pantry, and no wall cabinets. The quote from British Standard was around £7500. Our Ikea cabinets ended up costing about £900 (we couldn't believe it) and the doors were £2500. We then splashed out on Devol hardware to complete the look, and it's stunning. We arrived at this configuration after about a year of research and talking to lots of interior design friends about the best hacks. I am very fussy when it comes to these things, and couldn't be happier. We also wanted to replicate the devol tongue and groove end panels so shaker doors replicated using V Groove (you wouldn't notice).
