It depends what you're looking for. Lostock and the area around Chorley New Road (out of Bolton) are well thought of and more sought after, on the other side is Bromley Cross and Turton - again family, residential areas.

If you could look a little way out of Bolton, Chapeltown and Egerton have some very nice areas.

If you are looking at Bolton school then lostock is a good location easy bus links! Nice area. Trains to Manchester for the weekends.

By the way, not sure if you want your boy to continue to study Japanese curriculum part time but there is a Japanese school on Saturdays only at Lymm high school which is probably 30 minute drive away on the motorway. They do Japanese in the morning and some stay for maths in the afternoon. Mixture of overseas workers kids and half Japanese kids from international marriages. Just thought it worth sharing :)
