Would you buy a house right next to a council house?

When I say right next door, it's one half of a semi. The other half is the council house. Most in the (small) avenue seem to have been sold off to private ownership, but the one attached to the one I like, has not (I don't think).

It's £400k FFS!

i certainly wouldn't, anyone could end up living there, and they're there because they can't afford their own property to own

Quelle horreur

nappyrat · 04/03/2017 18:19

LostMyDotBrain, RE: I don't see the connection between being in a council owned property and lack of consideration.

I think what I am trying to say is that I would value having a neighbour who is on my wavelength (whatever that is), and I might have far less chance of getting this if I live next to a council house.

Disclaimer - I had an amazing neighbour a few years back who it turned out was a council tenant and she was fab. I do realise there are exceptions as well as stereotypes etc. I'm looking at the balance of probability. If such a think exists here.

You could get the neighbours from hell whether they own, rent privately or it's a council house, always a bit of a lottery isn't it?

PortiaCastis · 04/03/2017 18:20

You could end up with twatty neighbours even if you pay top dollar for a house. My Mum is stuck with an idiot who plays his violin badly until the small hours of the morning and keeps her awake with his noise

Fucking...wow. I mean I knew people must think like that but to state it in such a shameless way...speechless.

LostMyDotBrain · 04/03/2017 18:21

What I mean nappy is that the fact that a person is living in a council owned property is not an indicator of whether they're capable able of renting. Most people in council houses do pay rent. And housing benefit is available to all renters who have the financial need, not just those in council houses. Council houses nowadays aren't just for the poverty stricken.

portia
Me, snobby? Are you incapable of reading properly or are you accusing me of 'reverse snobbery'? (which is not a thing)

PortiaCastis · 04/03/2017 18:24

Sorry I was so cross I typed the wrong poster name in, my apologies

LostMyDotBrain · 04/03/2017 18:24

Christ almighty.

Why do you think someone who owns a property is more likely to be on your wavelength than someone who rents from the council? Are you aware of just how snobby you're coming across?

nappyrat · 04/03/2017 18:24

Lost - really?! Who are they for?

Gallavich I agree with you anyway and sorry

Frouby · 04/03/2017 18:26

Worst ndns I have ever had owned their property. Absolute scumbags they were.

Best ndn is my current one. HA property. Just like mine.

I see what you are saying. However if absolute scumbags move into a council property at least you can complain to the council.

When you own your property the only thing that you can do is get environmental health and police involved. But it doesn't make a blind bit of difference to be honest. You will still be kept awake all hours by arguing, fighting, drug addicts banging in the door and most annoyingly some amphetamine adict hoovering at 3am.

123yourusername · 04/03/2017 18:26

I'm a housing association tenant, I keep myself to myself, quiet, clean and tidy and polite to my neighbours. However if I was in the position to buy no, I wouldn't buy next to a council house. This isn't coming from snobbery as I am a HA tenant myself, but in my opinion the likelihood of having scruffy/noisy/ dirty/four uncontrolled noisy kids running round in knickers in the street mid December/etc etc type of neighbours is a lot higher next to a council house.

mnbvcxzl · 04/03/2017 18:26

That twat Frank Dobson for a start.

tattiehat · 04/03/2017 18:27

We did just that 4 years ago, great house for our needs, had lovely neighbours then neighbours moved the new tenants were AWFUL!!! I mean police at their door regularly, smashed windows etc Confused
We then had to move due to job changes and had a nightmare trying sell, the estate agent said we had the best house on the street but we were next to the worst, we did manage to sell eventually but it was awful at the time and there was absolutely nothing we could do about it

LostMyDotBrain · 04/03/2017 18:27

really?! Who are they for?

Renters. Some councils still have houses with cheaper rents but most are now standard rates. Council and HA properties offer more security than private lets though, so are more desirable to many.

dalmatianmad · 04/03/2017 18:27

I'm seriously shocked at some of these responses!

Do some of you think that council tenants don't have values and morals? Or that they don't look after their property?

I owned my house house but due to circumstances I'm now in a H/A property, I work as a specialist nurse, my dc attend a really good school. We have Dalmatians ffs.

Not all council house folk are scummy bastards you know Grin

MoroccoMaybe · 04/03/2017 18:28

I am in the process of buying an ex council semi, I have absolutely no idea if it's NDN is council, privately rented or owned! It hadn't crossed my mind to enquire. I've seen them though, they look like a quite normal family to me. Should I be looking for tails or third nipples?

BuckingFrolicks2 · 04/03/2017 18:28

Good god and I thought I was a snob!!

What if they have a huge HUGE tv? What if their badly brought up kids make a noise? What if they have a Staffie? What if we can't discuss Nietzsche over a cup of Mate while admiring our fucking begonias?

BlessThisMess · 04/03/2017 18:29

I live (privately owned) in a street of council houses. There are about 70 other houses here, of which maybe half are owned and half rented, so say 35 'council'/HA tenants. There are no problem families/bad neighbours here (I've lived here 20 years so familiar with most people). There was one family which used to be annoying with loud arguments, but the wife has now left and all is quiet. I bet that's better odds of problem neighbours to any other type of street, op.

My tenant neighbours on one side are a respectable family who keep their house and garden tidier than we do, and the neighbours the other side are elderly brothers who are pleasant enough. Many of the other tenants are older people who've lived here their entire lives.

I really think the stereotype you have of council tenants are way off.

LostMyDotBrain · 04/03/2017 18:29

We have Dalmatians ffs.

Thanks everyone for the messages. I appreciate the honesty here. I think those of you who are saying I am being a snob end of are just not being honest. My 400k is bloody bloody hard earned. I cannot afford to just waste it on a risky investment.

My views on people on benefits are not what you might expect. I think it's a bloody tough life (one I have some - limited - experience of) and can happen to us all - just takes a bit of bad luck.

I'm in a housing association property, I can't afford to buy my own house (all my money went on my flat screen and my goat dontcha know!) the family next door owns their house and would you believe we have a shared wall! How they cope I'll never know!

I don't plan on moving and I'm a thoroughly nice neighbour, quiet, considerate and I don't even let my pleb show when I'm in the garden!

This thread is ridiculous btw! People that own houses can be arses as well you know!
