If you're going to paint it, it doesn't need to be veneered. The original would probably have been pine. What are the dimensions, and what price have you seen?

JT05 · 28/12/2016 10:27

I don't think the style is difficult to find, DIY store, Internet, UPVC door installers, reclaimation yards.

Price is obviously an issue, but a front door is your first defence against intruders, so it is wise to get the strongest, well fitted one that you can afford.

MrCreosote · 28/12/2016 10:35

I agree with JT. You would be better off getting a UPVC, multi locking system front door for security.

Wooden doors do look nice but, are easier to brake in and can affect your home insurance.

PigletJohn · 28/12/2016 10:59

I don't agree that plastic doors are more secure.

The Eurolock cylinder has been a great source of weakness, and you can cut through the panels with a sturdy breadknife. A BS deadlock is far superior.

The reason plastic doors and windows are festooned with multiple hooks and secondary bolts is to compensate for their innate weakness and flexibility.

Is it wooden or composite?
We have a new composite door and it is lovely. Very strong.
It was supplied by the builder who replaced our double glazed windows.

DayToDayGlobalShit · 28/12/2016 11:11

Looks like a composite door to me. Very stylish but quite expensive.

DIYDummy · 28/12/2016 11:53

Not sure whetger it's wood or composite. I just like how it looksGrin how much would you expect to spend on something like that? The ones I have seen are £800-£1000!

We got a beautiful composite door from the composite door shop.
Online company and it took longer to deliver than they initially quoted but the finished product and fit is lovely. They will custom make whatever you want.

A good quality solid wood front door nicely glazed with good door furniture and a three lever and five lever quality lock will easily cost £1500. A door must be in keeping the the period of the property.

It is the threshold of your home. A upvc door on a period property will wipe thousands off the sale value, especially in smart London streets.

On a similar property, in 1990, I got a carpenter to fit a well made wooden door, the locksmith to transfer the licks and a specialist to copy the original stained glass panels for me for about £800. The London Door Company quoted closer to £1500 even then.

You can get the look you want by sorting the glazing yourself providing the door is good quality.

MrCreosote · 28/12/2016 17:11

Piglet John. Have you ever seen police trying to force entry into a house with UPVC doors?

Wooden doors normal take one hit, UPVC doors can take 20+ hits. All depends on the door and if the panel is fitted separately. No bread knife will get through my doors. 😀

PigletJohn · 28/12/2016 17:23

nope.

PigletJohn · 28/12/2016 17:23

nope.

Etak15 · 28/12/2016 17:25

Composite doors are v.good and strong and you can get in any colour and have the glass bit how you like - you can get one that would look just like that, about £800 ish fitted

PigletJohn · 28/12/2016 17:36

I couldn't find a film of a corkscrew.

Hoorah for BS3621 !

talkingtoclarry · 28/12/2016 17:43

Another vote for composite. I'm v sad but I genuinely love our front door, it's red and is stunning! And since we had ours installed we got asked by several neighbours as to who did it and the chap has been to another five houses to install similar! (Wish I was on commission!)

talkingtoclarry · 28/12/2016 17:46

This has come up on just a general google of grey composite door, ''tis lovely!

I think the one in DIYDummy's pic is wood, because I think I can see a BS nightlatch armoured escutcheon, and the glass mouldings might be less bulky.

OhTheRoses · 28/12/2016 18:03

I agree with Piglet John. Those doors aren't secure. As a minimum you need a super Banham/Chubb Masterlock about 18 inches up from the middle and another five lever lock at about knee height, on a hardwood solid door with reinforced hinges to the right. Notwithstanding the locked inner door, good window locks, alarm and security lights.

dotdash · 28/12/2016 18:10

Is this the sort of thing? I've used this company for internal doors, very good quality and efficient service.
They have loads of different styles.

HowardMoonsJazzTrumpet · 28/12/2016 18:10

Not a fan of composite doors (though they are better than upvc). The glazing is really naff and the panelling looks cheap (though I'm aware that composite doors are quite costly). I'm aghast at the idea of UPVC or composite on a period house. Not good

HowardMoonsJazzTrumpet · 28/12/2016 18:15

hardwood external version of the door in the OP. You probably need to pay a local glazier to put the nice glass in and add in the cost of fixtures (locks, hinges, letterbox etc) & fitting but the basic door isn't £££.

PigletJohn · 28/12/2016 18:22

dowelled construction is not as good as Mortice and Tenon, which will cost a little more.

HowardMoonsJazzTrumpet · 28/12/2016 18:23

Ah, there you go. It did look cheap for an external.

NotMeNoNo · 28/12/2016 18:24

I was going to suggest a Malton with laminated glass and the full works of locks, hinge bolts, London Bar etc if that is important to you.
