like this one from the same place

www.leaderdoors.co.uk/doors-c14/external-doors-c18/external-hardwood-doors-c106/xl-joinery-external-hardwood-un-finished-richmond-unglazed-door-mortice-tenon-p2537

it will be a bit more rigid, especially at the top where you see there is more timber in the corners.

If you want to improve security in a glazed door, look at Laminated glass. Sorry, bit more expensive again. I had a DG unit made with laminated for my patio door, the glazier or fitter will know where to order it.

In reply to piglet John.

British standard barrel locks now have a deliberate weak point near to the end of the barrel so they cannot snap the same way as in the video you sent a link to.

They are more secure than a wooden door with a 5 level lock.

Nice try but, video is out dated.

PigletJohn · 28/12/2016 19:52

yes, there are snap-resistant cylinders. Not so many actually in people's doors though. They still snap easily, but leave a portion in the door. Unless you pull it out with a screw.

And not much chance of seeing a Eurocylinder lock that meets BS3621.

MrCreosote · 28/12/2016 20:12

And what is the point in having a lock that meets BS3621 when all the wooden door needs is one hit, and they're in?

A snap-resistant cylinder lock in a UPVC door is harder to break into than a 5 lever lock in a wooden door.

PigletJohn · 28/12/2016 20:20

not for a burglar with a screwdriver, a screw, and a nail-puller or claw hammer.

Faster, cheaper and quieter than your policeman's battering. And fits in your coat pocket.

I would always go for hardwood over uPVC or composite, based on looks alone. I have got to my middle years without anyone smashing my front door in, and I reckon I'll get to my deathbead without it occurring now. We don't even lock the feckin doors. It would be One Dopey Bastard who turned up with a comedy battering ram and didn't think to try the handle.

Anyways, I am loving this thread.

pigletjohn, you're so dreamy Blush

MrCreosote · 28/12/2016 20:39

Seriously John. With the new cylinder locks, you would need a lot more than a screwdriver and a hammer to break in.

sparechange · 28/12/2016 20:41

We got our door from here and the service was excellent.
Can't remember how much it was, because we got a few internal doors at the same time

They cover London and the SE

For Christ's sake, lozenge, lay off the Baileys will ya? Grin

This is a serious discussion about men and doors here.

If you have nothing to say about nightlatch armoured escutcheons then move along.

lozengeoflove · 28/12/2016 20:45

I can't help it, kidnapped. Normally any talk of snap-resistant cylinders would have me clawing at the door, but pigletjohn just makes me go all weak at the knees.

I am replacing my upvc front door with a hardwood door similar to the picture. I found the installers had the best prices for the door. I am going to have to pay an increase in house insurance even though my new door will have a multi magnetic fob system locking.

SwedishEdith · 28/12/2016 21:50

God, can't wait for the day I can sling my upvc door on to a skip. Can't believe someone is actually suggesting one. Shock

Not keen on composite either as can't change the colour.

Door wars!

YouSpinmeRound · 28/12/2016 22:00

I always end up in Howden's for doors.

PigletJohn · 28/12/2016 22:17

I got a secondhand one of these off ebay today for my shed. I already have them on my house, so it will match. The older ones used to be made of solid hardwood, but modern ones more likely veneered on engineered core. The solid is much better but I am regretful of the destruction of tropical forests in the past.

M&T construction and incredibly strong and rigid. I used to have an Edwardian house with a door of similar design, but a bit thicker and made if Baltic pine, which is why I chose it.

Today's one came off ebay, I surmise they have become unfashionable and somebody ripped it off their house and replaced it with an inferior door.

It weighs 6 1/2 stone.

I paid a tenner.

Sleepybeanbump · 28/12/2016 22:25

I'd bet my bottom dollar the OPs picture is a timber door. You can tell from the glazing, the furniture and the moulding. The composite doors look naff in my opinion, mainly because the furniture on them is always wrong- they always have pvc type furniture on rather than what you'd have on a timber door.
OP I'm pretty sure you can get doors like that in Howdens. Also B&Q but not such good choice or quality IME. That's only if an off the peg size suits tho. Custom made would be a few £1k.

LowDudgeon · 28/12/2016 22:34

This is ours - it's composite from doorstop & supposedly pretty secure. It was about £750 fitted, including frame & top light

I love that it will never need painting!

PigletJohn · 28/12/2016 23:00

I see "doorstop" offer the ERA Vectis locking system. I am rather fond of this, because it includes a 5-lever lock that also operates Multipoint locking.

I don't know of another maker doing that.

I hope that if customers demand better security, multipoint locking will generally improve.

LowDudgeon · 28/12/2016 23:13

Ours has metal catch things at top, middle & bottom (is that the multipoint?) plus deadlock at the handle which I think is 5 lever. It's one of the Yale ones, not ERA.

PigletJohn · 28/12/2016 23:22

A 4 lever lock will have a key shaped something like this

the pic even shows you what the levers look like. Observe that the moving parts are made of brass (with stainless steel springs) so do not rust or corrode even if damp.

It is possible (but now very unusual) to get a miniature 5 lever. This key is not a toy, it opens a front door.

5 lever, obv.

LowDudgeon · 28/12/2016 23:24

Ours is this one I think.
