I would never put a plastic door on my (1920s) house. They are hideous. We have the beautiful original wooden door with leaded light, which is sadly warped and draughty, but which I will not replace until I can afford to get a replica made. My insurers have never asked whether we have upvc, just about the locks.

Dudgeon. That is the new cylinder lock that I'd recommend. The key cannot be copied (without the ID card) and the cylinder cannot be picked or snapped.

Thanks all. Although I think I may be more confused than before Confused our house is a Victorian terrace (not a particularly grand one though) so think maybe wood would look best. So expensive though!!

True that they can't be cut on the High St, but there are online companies that can copy from a good photo (which was lucky for me as we've lost the code card, & the 5th key attached to it Blush)

It is recommended to have the replacement keys delivered to another address though!

MrCreosote · 29/12/2016 15:33

Dudgeon. If you have lost your keys, it would be wise to change your lock, just as a precaution. Home insurance would be invalid if some scumbag breaks in using a key.

LowDudgeon · 29/12/2016 15:44

I don't think it's lost as such, we just don't know where it is - & even if it was properly lost, there's no address on it. We had 2 spares, both on anonymous keyrings. Over time they both disappeared, thanks to casual offspring.

Then one turned up in a coat pocket, just not the one with the code tag on, which might be in another pocket somewhere. There are 6 of us & a lot of random coats & jackets Grin

That looks like my door! Mine is the original wooden door (Edwardian terrace), painted by us, new locks, glazing. Cost = £very little. Looks great.

I agree that plastic doors often don't look great (especially the ones with imitation grain).
