Where to live near London? Safe, green and open-minded place

Hi all,
Could you please give me tips on places near London to buy a flat/house 250K cash, in a safe area, green and open minded. We are both europeans ;)
I love London, want to relocate there but I'm scared of crimes and pollution!

I think you will really struggle to live outside of London without a car. Public transport in rural areas is not exactly extensive in my experience

Problem is OP that if you live far enough away from London to buy in a nice area for £250k you'll find transport into London is expensive (particularly since you'll pay full price not season ticket rates) and realistically you'll need a car.

"Not whitetrash"

Your future neighbours will be lucky to live by someone like you

I was going to offer some suggestions until I saw the offensive white trash comment...

What d'you class as whitetrash then OP? Hmm

We're very 'open minded' here in Essex but a tad sensitive about being called names.
An hour on the train , less on the restricted stops and we're welcoming CrossRail .
Not sure what you'd get for £250 TBH.

white trash

I think you'd find America more accommodating OP, given recent events, as that's where the term came from.

not whitetrash

Vile. Strange type of open-minded too.

OP
Since you are from Europe, probably white trash is something you learnt via American reality TV trauma happening around us now. Sorry but that's not ok.
Regarding your question, if you can afford travel to London, move to Hitchin. Lovely countryside and Central London very near too. And they voted Remain Lots of young professional families. I sadly can't afford the whole travel thing.

presumably if you've got 250k in cash you could use that as a deposit and get a mortgage for say another 300k to bring the price up to £550k? Thats still pushing is for green leafy near London tbh - we paid that 8 years ago.

I live in a Gloucestershire village ( not the poshest but still nice) and you can get a decent house for £250k and we're 2 hours from London on the train. You'd need a car though. Not sure what your definition of whitetrash is?? My village has council houses and flats and then some very nice big houses so a big mix. Everyone I have met has been very nice and welcoming.

Have you seen the news today? Someone stabbed to death outside Plumstead train station in broad daylight. I'm sure I'm wrong about the area though.

firawla · 19/11/2016 01:35

I was going to say Pinner but you won't get it for 250k - nice villagey feel in outer London though, v handy for transport into central London but feels much less busy

It's interesting! Thanks all.
Plumstead sounds scary. But this happens all over London...

For 250 you won't get a charming village anywhere near London
The commute would be expensive and hellish.

This is how far I'd go from London: Hove. But we visited some parts of Hove and sadly didn't fell in love with it. I was building big hope! Looking back I kind of think that it's better than most parts of London (doesn't feel dangerous) BUT so many cars!

Oxford. It will be difficult to get much for 250, but you might find something.

Which part of Europe are you coming from, to escape cars and white trash?

Oxford??? She said £250k not £650!

I know London and surrounding areas really well
But I don't help those who use the term "white trash"
Not that I come across it often
I'm not white btw.

I really hope you don't move here, it can be rough but it's a good friendly places where many types of people chug along together nicely.

Calling humans "trash". FFS.

You'd get a one bed flat in St Albans - not green or leafy village and no idea how white or trashy the neighbours would be though...

Report
myoriginal3 · 22/11/2016 14:38

I think you'll find that at that price all you will afford is a trailer. Far from London. Where all the rest of the thrash reside.
