I've just been quoted £1450 for one. Wood mainly not MDF. Is this a lot? We were a bit shocked 😮

We need to get more quotes obviously but wondered if this seems normal?

If you want to think outside the box a bit, many years ago we got furniture from this place www.aif.london in Islington. (Was called chest of drawers). We got a bookcase and some reclaimed teak cabinets (on special) and they actually fit our alcoves in Victorian terrace and also our 1930s semi. Proper wood and works out cheaper. The Victorian became a rental and when we sold it couldn't get rid of the furniture . So now we have put the bookcase in our alcove taken the doors off one of the teak cabinets and put on bookcase and voila. . Not sure if I can post a photo easily let me check.

Excuse the mess - our storage is lacking in the house so stuff isn't sure it's meant to be.

We got ours from diyalcovecupboards and h built them. Was about half the quote we'd had from a carpenter. H learnt a lot along the way(!) but they turned out pretty well. (Still need 1 more coat of paint, I changed my mind about where I wanted the shelves.)

Marmitelover56 are you able to share your joiners details please? I’m in Bristol

You've never spilt water onto MDF! it absorbs and expands and doesn't return to its original profile - that said it is fine for shelves if won't come into contact with water and the sheet thickness is sufficient for span.
