Can anyone who has half a clue about landline wiring please please help me

Hi folks I'm hoping someone can help as I'm not sure what to do.

We got some flooring laid today and the guy who did it cut the wiring from the master telephone socket. We didn't have anything directly plugged into it, just the wire, which then fed other sockets round the house.

Anyway the wire is now cut, so I thought in the meantime I could just plug the router and our landline into the master socket. That's not working.

Does anyone have any ideas ?? Or will I just need to bite the bullet and get a bt engineer out?

however - if he has just cut the wire that was plugged into the socket, all you need to do is replace that. If he's cut actual hard wiring then you do need Openreach. You'll have to contact your phone/broadband supplier for help as you can't call Openreach directly.

You router should work from the master socket. Does a wired phone work from there?
You'll need to call your service provider who will get OpenReach to repair any faults. But if the extension wiring was an amateur job they may not wish to touch it.
Naturally the flooring guy should be paying.

Call 150, ask for sales and arrange a new extension to be fitted, make sure the flooring guy pays as it isn't cheap.

In the meantime look at your socket it should be an NTE5 which means that there are 2 screws holding the bottom section of the faceplate on (if the faceplate is one solid piece ignore this - you need BT) unscrew the screws, with the extension wiring cut the plastic cover should come away cleanly and expose a 'test port' plug your micro filter and the phone router into that and it will be fine :)

This is as long as the wire he cut was to the extensions and not the main feed into the socket - if it was the main line in again it's a BT only job to fix and you will be charged as the tradesman was working for you when the damage was done

The flooring guy was my OH friend - he was doing it as a favour. It's gonna cost us more than a proper person would have cost.

I've phoned sky and they're going to send a BT engineer out after reading your replies.

Wired phone isn't working from there

I tried the test port - no joy. Wonder how much this is gonna cost

The absolute minimum is £95, but probably more. Plus Vat of course.

Ah well these things happen I guess. Turns out it's my OH fault. He told him it was ok to cut as "we don't use it for anything"! Ok there's nothing plugged directly into it (router phone etc) but it's pretty important lol!

Don't blame the fitter, if it's in the way it has to go. Fortunately you don't need BT as it's very simple. Rrmove the two screes in the face plate. Take the face plate off revealing the master socket underneath. Remove the two screws under this. The connections are push fit blades. Chase dome slack out of the cable that has been cut. Remove the outer sheath to expose the cores.It looks like the tails are still hanging out so just match the colours of the cable to the stubbs left. Place the cable in the slot and push in with a thin tool ( small screw driver or the back edge of a Stanley blade. I know BT open reach give dire warnings about not moving the drop cable but but even if it is this side rather than the extension it's the same simple job so don't pay that sort of money. If the tails are shorting and the extension is on the primary (master) connection point then this would explain why the phone is not working. Also if it is the extension side it's not in common for only two wires to be connected don't worry if there are more wires than slots just trim these off so that the can't touch anything. Well that's the openreach man away - he said they bill sky and it's up to sky whether they bill us or not. So we will just need to see but I don't mind at least it's fixed!!
