Can I mix paint and a water-based wood treatment for exterior wood?

So, I want to buy some log edging for a flower bed, but I want it to stain it bright yellow ie. to still see the wood grain, but also preserve it. I wondered if I can mix paint and a preserver. Has anyone done this?
