Gas hob - stainless steel or glass?

PingPongBat · 28/12/2015 13:31

We've opted for a gas hob in our new kitchen but I am wavering between stainless steel and black glass. (But it'll be a Neff one to match the ovens)

If anyone has either of these, can you advise on pros & cons re cleaning, appearance, durability etc?

thank you!

I used to love my gas hob
then I bought a Neff Induction hob and would never ever go back Grin
Not much help for you
but cleaning induction is such a doddle

PingPongBat · 28/12/2015 17:57

I've thought long & hard about gas vs induction, but I came to the conclusion that we would stick to gas as we do wok cooking once a week or more, and I get the impression that it's better on gas. Or am I wrong?

Ah yes, I've no experience of a wok on induction
but you can get induction friendly woks

or even a combi / domino hob

I have a black glass hob. It looks lovely and matches the oven, but needs constant wiping because every spec of dust shows up straight away. I also worry slightly about breaking it if I were to drop anything heavy on it.

The last one I had was stainless steel and it was much less needy in terms of cleaning, but wasn't as aesthetically pleasing.

On balance I think I'd go for stainless steel over glass, but it really depends on how much importance you place on the overall look of the kitchen.

Domino would be great if we had the room, but I'm short on work top space so need to stick to a 60cm wide hob. I'd be worried about breaking a glass hob too...

I had a look in John Lewis earlier and the glass ones look more fiddly to clean as they have 4 squares of glass on top of the main glass base, they seem to be there to keep the 4 pan supports in place. So more places for grease to collect?

I'm happy with the look of either the glass or stainless steel, I think. We're having stainless steel appliances & ovens have black glass, so the steel would look good I think.

I have a black glass Aeg hob. Its lovely but there are streaks All. The. Time.

Get stainless steel. I wish I had.

I have a black glass smeg one. I keep a special microfibre cloth for cleaning it and a polishing one from "Vita clean" for it. Cleaning it is not a big problem.

Cleaning cloth's here here

hmm - very mixed opinions! anyone else?

cannot comment on the gas side of it
but my induction is glass and is now 6 years old
its a doddle to keep clean and I've not smashed it yet Grin

OnceAnOwl · 31/12/2015 19:09

Hope I'm not too late...but please get stainless steel. Have black glass here. It looks good but I'm constantly buffing it. You wipe and unless you buff it smears. I think stainless steel looks fine. (Btw, the salesman in the kitchen studio said don't get black glass, we thought we knew best Hmm

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 01/01/2016 08:16

We've got a black glass induction hob andvit is a doddle to clean, you just wipe over it. No marks or smears. I can't see why a gas glass hob would be different.

BikeGeek · 01/01/2016 11:59

We have a neff black gas hob, no regrets. The pan supports mean it's unlikely you'll drop anything onto the glass bit. Have found it less effort to clean than other gas hobs tbh

OnceAnOwl · 01/01/2016 16:42

The difference between a glass electric hob and a glass gas hob is that the electric one is one continuous area making it easy to wipe, rather than all the edges you get round the burners where gunk collects.

PingPongBat · 01/01/2016 19:00

Thanks for the input everyone. Not too late Once - I've opted for this stainless steel one

There seem to be an equal number of people who say that glass is difficult to clean, and those who say stainless steel is difficult. All our new appliances are going to be stainless steel & I'm going to invest in some Lakeland specialist cleaners. Or maybe a cleaner Grin

I like that one Pingpong, you won't be disappointed. Mmm, I might think about persuading DH we need a new stainless steel one!Grin

DramaAlpaca · 01/01/2016 22:49

PingPongBat I have a very similar Neff stainless steel hob to the one you've gone for & I'm very happy with it. I really like the wok burner in the middle. It's not too bad to keep clean.

priyanka123 · 06/05/2019 22:00

I can’t decide whether to go for gas on glass or gas on stsinless steel also I’m having s six burner job do I go for wok burner in the middle or end?
