Buying new house - builder has quoted an additional £1350 to supply and fit curtain battens...is he having a laugh?

"to supply and fit curtain batterns in softwood, decorated to match walls to all possible window apertures. 100mm up from head of reveal, 150 mm past each side of reveal aperture"

Is he charging over the odds?

It is a much larger than average house if that is relevant (more cost for more windows I guess)

How many windows?

Anastasie · 07/10/2015 11:49

Perhaps he doesn't want to do it?

IME people overcharge for stuff that's out of their normal remit iyswim, partly due to not having the stuff required and partly as they think it's something better suited to someone else.

How big is the house?

OooooohMissDiane · 07/10/2015 11:52

The builders of my new house didn't do this, the lady who made my curtains did. I wouldn't really say it's his job, that's why he's quoted you that much.

We just had a builder quote or some work in our office.... he quoted us £17K more than we know the materials will cost him!!

This is going to massively depend on how many windows he's doing. Break it down into a price per window, find out how much you'd pay for the supply of materials, then you've got a better figure to look at.

RingDownRingUp · 07/10/2015 12:59

How many windows? Not unreasonable if there are many windows and/or it is an old house (with tricky walls). I would expect to pay much more than that to do that job in my house.

hmcReborn · 08/10/2015 08:06

Okay - thanks for the feedback. I am trying to remember how many windows there are (we are not 'in' yet) - there are quite a few really. I guess the price per window - as BackforGood suggested - isn't too bad. Thank you for the input

I did it myself in my first ever flat - also new build, it was tiny - there were 6 windows. It took me hours over multiple days to cut the wood/ prep it/ paint it and then wall mount it securely.

Once it was done though I was so glad I had botHered as hanging the curtains was a doddle.

I gueSS it comes down to how much you want it do me, whether you can do it yourself or whether you can be bothered subcontracting it to a third party to do before you move in.

Personally I'd probably pay the money!
