Cost to remove and dispose of asbestos roof

Hi, has anyone recently paid to have an asbestos roof removed from a garage/ large shed? It is the asbestos/concrete stuff (the stuff that is basically ok when in one piece but not ok when broken up). We need to have one removed and I have been told that a lot of companies really over charge as it isn't quite the specialist job they might lead you to believe but I don't know what sort of price range to expect. Any experience helpful. TIA.

Look it up on the HSE web site. It's not that specialist. You can do it yourself if you follow the guidance. Don't get ripped off. There was another thread on this recently

got ride of ours ourself, Bristol has skips for it at the local waste site, just has to be double wrapped and check if the skips not full before setting off

Thanks. I gave been through all the info and I know it us not that specialist, but DH and i won't be able to do this ourselves (mobility issues plus me but small and rubbish at diy!), hence asking for people's experience if cost so I can avoid bring ripped off.

We got rid of ours ourselves, but we were quoted £200 just for disposal plus the cost for dismantling and wrapping.

If it is bound asbestos, i.e. it is in concrete, you can do it safely yourself. I've done it and it is OK to do, but you must, must, MUST do some reading up first because it is deadly stuff and you don't want to get it wrong. There are simple things you can do that make a big difference to your safety.

If anyone has asbestos that is not bound, please don't tackle it yourself! I used to volunteer at a hospice, and I saw a lot of people with asbestos-related lung cancer and trust me when I say that you absolutely do not want to put yourself at risk of getting it.

You will need kit that costs around £50-60 in total, which you'll dispose of at the end of the job, including:

• special disposal bags (available online, hard to find in store). The waste has to be double bagged and labelled. It's worth checking the size of the pieces on your roof to make sure that they fit in the bags properly. You want to break pieces when they are fully contained in the bag, and not before if at all possible.
• a special disposable waste suit that makes you look like you are going to a rave. There is even a special way that you need to take it off to avoid spreading fibres.
• special dustmasks - these must be the correct kind. You can't just use any old ones
• wellies that you can wash down (you put the suit over these, not the wellies over the suit)

In our case, we were able to put the waste in a dedicated container at the tip (under no circumstances should it go in general waste). My council were extremely helpful with advice about how to do the whole process myself, and it was well worth ringing them to get the lowdown.

Our council sent someone out to get it. Was free of charge, but had to be double-wrapped etc... (Ours was buried in garden so no help in how to get it off!)

Thanks for this. Has anyone had a quote for removal and disposal, for comparison? As explained above, we won't be able to do it ourselves but I assume a general builder/handyman type therefore should be able to help?

I was quoted £2000 to remove and dispose of a roof 3m x 1m, and the bricks underneath

It cost me about £200 - £50 for asbestos gear and £150 for a skip. Plus a weekend's work.

I've had 2 quotes for removal of a garage with it in the roof, £850 and £1000! I'm still looking as I think that's a bit much, but maybe I'm wrong?

We paid about £1000 for the garage roof to be removed and disposed off - plus there was an old extension roof (already double wrapped) to take away too. We were very glad to be rid of it tbh.

It was done by a couple of man and a van - well not quite - was all sorted by our builders and the chaps that came along didn't have anything more exciting than the overalls/masks described above. They double bagged it all, shoved it in the back of their van, had a cup of tea and were off.
