"Cinema rooms" - why?

A perfectly ordinary modern house on a road near where we live has just come on the market, pimped to within an inch of its life, including a so-called "cinema room". It's on at a hilariously high price given its location, and I'll watch its future progress with considerable interest.

But it makes me think - all these mental oligarch's places in Chelsea have cinema rooms, presumably so the owners don't have to talk to their guests. But otherwise why, unless you worked in the industry or had three teenage kids, would you want one? Will anyone on here admit to having one? All I can think of is my late DM saying, "God, darling, how VULGAR."

I raise your cinema room, with the opportunity to buy a home nightclub www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-30994998.html

I have a bar and people have been known to dance in it.

If I were younger I would have loved a nightclub.

Oo, I'd love a (proper) cinema room... All dark, amazing sound system and huge projector system/screen, soundproofing so I could watch as loudly as I wanted to, comfy seating for me and several friends (or the kids and their friends). Watching films was never really a big leisure activity of mine before I had children, but now it is about the inly thing I can do after the kids are in bed, so I have got really into it. I can't have a massive telly and sound system though as they'd totally dominate my living room and disturb the neighbours. I can dream, though...

^^

That's not a cinema room though, really, is it.

DH has always wanted one and has some carefully specced plans for the basement if we ever win the lottery .

His argument is that the way you'd arrange to room for sociability is different to how you'd arrange it for best view/to be in the sweet spot for surround sound - hence luxury is not needing to compromise.

In his world - cinema rooms are masculine and windowless, whereas sitting rooms are airy and bright with fresh flowers. And obv the sitting room then has no TV - which is actually nicer.

The houses in your link look way overpriced (northerner here) the second one is quite nice but over a mil just for a nice 4 bed family home, not even detached Shock

PIL have a cinema room. They have a big house with a gym, stables and a swimming pool but it's not blingy. It's just adapted to what MIL wants (she doesn't ride, work out, swim or watch many films Confused)

They have done it out properly on 2 levels, big seats, with black walls and special acoustic ceiling (so you don't get so much noise in the rest of the house and meant to optimise sound in the room. The screen drops down over the window which has black out curtains. When not in use it's just a bizarre unused lounge space which wouldn't suit me but they seem happy.

I do enjoy watching films in there. When we stay with them we like to go out to the cinema but equally we can stay in and watch a film at home with much more cinema quality.

The whole house is a bit meh. It's no oligarchs palace. It's much more down to earth but suits them and their bizarre way of going OTT.

People think they must be loaded but actually they spent most of their money on their house. Makes sense as they get to enjoy it.

I used to have a cinema room and bar. Tacky as fuck and everyone loved it.

AryaUnderfoot · 02/05/2015 19:48

Ahh, wonkylegs that house is something else!

We only have four TVs in the house. However, we have committed the ultimate MN sin in that not one, not two but three of them are wall mounted (none above a fireplace though). We have committed another MN sin in that one is 55", one is 50" and one is 37". I do have an excuse because I'm partially sighted, but I actually just like whatching a f*ck-off big TV.

I'd love a bar, but only if I could get a strip of packets of scampi fries to hang from it.

Devora · 02/05/2015 22:00

We have one TV (a small one!) and I've been idly wondering whether we could benefit from a 2nd. I am only now realising how grossly under-endowed I am in the TV department. You see I have a way to go before I get on to cinema rooms and in-house nightclubs.

omg I never even considered this as a home decor option and now I really want it.

And pork scratchings. Those cheap ones.

It could be like the new bunting.

I have recently created a "cinema room" in my bathroom by running a lovely hot Epsom salt bath, lighting a candle or two, lots of tea (husband as on call tea butler) and Netflix on the tablet. Pretty antisocial but really relaxing!!
