"Cinema rooms" - why?

A perfectly ordinary modern house on a road near where we live has just come on the market, pimped to within an inch of its life, including a so-called "cinema room". It's on at a hilariously high price given its location, and I'll watch its future progress with considerable interest.

But it makes me think - all these mental oligarch's places in Chelsea have cinema rooms, presumably so the owners don't have to talk to their guests. But otherwise why, unless you worked in the industry or had three teenage kids, would you want one? Will anyone on here admit to having one? All I can think of is my late DM saying, "God, darling, how VULGAR."

OP posts:

The whole house is garish.

kickassangel · 30/04/2015 17:17

hmm, big bay windows providing plenty of glare off the screen.

stareatthetvscreen · 30/04/2015 18:55

lol arya

larch101 · 01/05/2015 10:48

Might be vulgar but I love it, great idea. Bit like chav ponds (jacuzzis) everything will have haters but if it suits your lifestyle....

I would love to move the TV out of the lounge and have a nice clean space for adults. Instead I have a toy infested, sticky floored cartoon viewing area.

We have a room that dh refers to as the cinema room and I call the TV room. It has a projector, blackout blind blocking the window with cinema screen over it and surround sound. Just a normal sofa and a beanbag for seating though. It is good for watching movies and we tend to have movie nights on Saturdays which is fun. (we didn't put it in - was previous owners)

MonstrousRatbag · 01/05/2015 15:58

The worst thibg about the first house OP posted is the deathtrap staircase. Shiny glass treads!

Devora · 01/05/2015 18:44

Wow, there's sterile, and then there's..... that house. Also loving that the EA can't spell contemporary.

As for cinema rooms per se, I don't have strong feelings. It wouldn't be my priority for spare living space, but then I'm not particularly into movies. What IS vulgar about this particular cinema room is what it tells us about the London housing market. Modestly sized house, modest location, cheaply done up and marketed as some kind of bling mansion. Yuck.

Devora · 01/05/2015 18:48

They like their tellies in that house, don't they Arya? I think I counted eight.

AryaUnderfoot · 01/05/2015 19:36

Yes, Devora, they certainly do!

Philoslothy · 01/05/2015 21:20

I tried to count how many televisions that we have in our house and I lost count, I think it is 10 .... at least.

We also have a projector setup for the garden.

fulltothebrim · 01/05/2015 21:22

We have one TV in our home that is rarely watched,

Philoslothy · 01/05/2015 21:24

We are far too thick to entertain ourselves.

fulltothebrim · 01/05/2015 21:27

Don't know how anyone finds the time to watch 10 tvs. I watch a movie every 5 weeks if I am lucky.

Philoslothy · 01/05/2015 21:29

I don't work, I have all the time in the world.

I also don't watch them all, some of them are in the children's rooms.

Philoslothy · 01/05/2015 21:30

We watch a movie or have a Netflix binge quite often. I am the antidote to hard working Tv hating MNers everywhere.

fulltothebrim · 01/05/2015 21:36

I don't hate TV, and I don't work particularly hard.
I am very busy though. When I am not taking my kids to their too many to mention activities or catching up with admin, cooking or shopping I prefer to do other things.
Free time I like to be at the gym, cultivate my garden or do nive things with friends rather that slob out in front of the TV.
Personal choices I guess.

southeastastra · 01/05/2015 21:38

i love watching films but really don't need a massive screen and private cinema room to enjoy them.

i guess if you like films that involve alot of noise/action they may float yer boat

saying that my dad would probably love one to watch his war films

Philoslothy · 01/05/2015 21:41

Fulltothebrim I do many of the things that you mention but also manage to slot in a fair amount of TV. I don't work though so most of my time is "free" I guess.

fulltothebrim · 01/05/2015 21:51

Each to their own, but I find a lot of TV and most movies very banal and dull. What do you find to watch that interests you so much?

SwedishEdith · 01/05/2015 21:55

I just can't imagine going to a particular room to watch a film.

CaptainHolt · 01/05/2015 22:14

That is the strangest house I've ever seen in all of my born days. They have the same bathroom sink as me but the rest of the house is strikingly different. I can see a cinema room might be a good use of a basement or garage conversion but to call the second reception room which is practically open plan and has both a massive patio door and a bedroom off it, a 'cinema room' because it's got a not very big TV on the wall is an odd decision.

Philoslothy · 01/05/2015 22:28

I suspect that compared to most MNers I am banal and dull.

Saturday night we watch the trash, but in the main iiving rooms.

We like crime series/drama like Law and Order, The Good wife, the Manchester series about the two female police women. I am know to sit in the bath with a a large glass of wine and catch up with the TV. My ultimate guilty pleasure is Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in a bubble bath.

Thursday night is politics night so Question Time and This Week.

We also love a Netflix binge, recently watcher Better Call Saul, Orange is not the only Black.

I quite like a History programme.

The children use the cinema room a fair bit. eldest dd has got about five or six friends round this evening and they are using the cinema room to watch films. It means that they leave the rest of the room undisturbed.

DH is more of a film person than me, he will often have people round and they will have a film night.

We go to the real cinema quite often too.

fulltothebrim · 01/05/2015 22:35

Yup, sorry that would bore me stupid. But if that's your thing then I am glad you enjoy it,

Philoslothy · 01/05/2015 22:38

lol fulltothe brim.

TV is a way of keeping plebs like me sedated so we don't turn nasty and revolt
