"Cinema rooms" - why?

A perfectly ordinary modern house on a road near where we live has just come on the market, pimped to within an inch of its life, including a so-called "cinema room". It's on at a hilariously high price given its location, and I'll watch its future progress with considerable interest.

But it makes me think - all these mental oligarch's places in Chelsea have cinema rooms, presumably so the owners don't have to talk to their guests. But otherwise why, unless you worked in the industry or had three teenage kids, would you want one? Will anyone on here admit to having one? All I can think of is my late DM saying, "God, darling, how VULGAR."

This is the kind of thing I mean about the oligarchs (except theirs are generally underground). It's so aggressively antisocial. I know I'm sounding a bit ranty but I just don't get it.

My house is where WAGS go to wank and MNers to die.

I have a popcorn machine in mine.

Amethyst24 · 30/04/2015 00:42

It must be like being on an aeroplane. Can I spend 11 hours in your house, Philoslothy, and pretend I'm flying first class? Grin

Ours looks a bit like that, there is nothing anti social about it. On the contrary we often have people over to watch films or more recently a Netflix binge.

Philoslothy · 30/04/2015 00:43

I don't get why it is "aggressively anti social"

mamapain · 30/04/2015 00:46

They're sitting next to each other so not that antisocial.

I'd love a house where wags go to wank bounce DH banned certain elements of my taste, this won't be happening.

I still like to watch Cribs reruns for inspiration though!

justonemoretime2p · 30/04/2015 00:48

I have one, my favourite thing about it is its hooked up to the entertainment computer so if I have a large group of people and we all want to watch something anyone who wants to be quiet can watch it in that room while others watch it casually in the living room.
It's great for games of thrones night.

grumbleina · 30/04/2015 01:09

What is going ON with those fence panels?
Why does your garden look like a prison exercise yard?
And WHY OH WHY have you astroturfed your balcony?
Is that a TELEVISION affixed to the extractor fan?
Why does there appear to be a projector pointed at a TV screen?
And do they really think a solitary sub woofer denotes 'cozy cinema atmosphere'?
That shower screen is SO not going to stop your toilet being soaking wet.
And neither is the one in the bath going to do much good.
What's WITH all the tellies?
And did you really NEVER think 'maybe we've got enough downlights'?

MyFriendsCallMeOh · 30/04/2015 02:23

We live in Texas and most houses here have proper cinema / media rooms. The problem is they are normally very boring rooms with hideous leather lay-z-boy type chairs. We have a retractable outdoor screen and projector outside and often sit round with fairy lights and candles watching movies. Much nicer to be outside....

HellKitty · 30/04/2015 02:48

We looked at a house, on't'internet, the other week. Within our budget, right number of rooms but there was a strange '80s 'antiqued pine' room. It was a sauna. I think they're swingers Shock

Aussiemum78 · 30/04/2015 03:01

The first one is bland but to be fair, it is completely empty. No rugs, no artwork, no furniture, no potted plants. A neutral colour is boring but can appeal to the kind of buyer that will come in and "finish" it off.

I don't have a cinema room but we have one family room that is open to the kitchen where we live, and another living room with doors that we use as a theatre room (or a room to put the children in to watch cartoons). The doors are key!

Glastokitty · 30/04/2015 06:29

I'm in Oz and most newish houses have a cinema room. Aussie houses are generally massive compared to UK houses though and have all sorts of extra stuff like this and outdoor kitchens, teenager wings etc. I don't especially want a cinema room, but I yearn for an outdoor kitchen and a tiki bar by the pool .

Woozlebear · 30/04/2015 07:34

Christ alive, that garden! It looks like a prison yard.

Developers keep getting their hands on nice little edwardian houses near me and doing this kind of crap to them Confused

TheFnozwhowasmirage · 30/04/2015 07:48

Around here, they are known as 'media rooms'. How I snorted when I first head that.

We would love a proper cinema room. With proper surround sound massive screen and cinema seats. We have no regular babysitter so don't get out much Sad so we watch a film as a bit of treat. Currently our spare room/study has a not very comfy sofa bed (to sit on, it's lovely to sleep on) and a projector as we aren't millionaires [lottery win emotion]]

LaurieFairyCake · 30/04/2015 07:56

I would have one too. It would then free up other spaces to be a library, craft room, drawing room.

All this multi purpose rooms thing isn't great and feels chaotic.

fulltothebrim · 30/04/2015 07:59

Horrible house, and small.

It looks like a bacterial containment facility. Small windows, industrial feel. More like an ebola research laboratory than a home.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 30/04/2015 07:59

I know 2 people who have converted their garages into cinema rooms Grin always makes me chuckle!

OldBeanbagz · 30/04/2015 08:01

We have a cinema room which is lovely and dark and has surround sound speakers. Perfect for watching movies though sadly lacking a popcorn machine & pick & mix selection. Only two seats too so the kids are on beanbags on the floor.

We don't have a tv in the living room though.

Coastingit · 30/04/2015 08:11

I quite like it! Blush By the time you put furniture in it wouldn't be sterile any more.

I have always loved a Laura Ashley - esque decor, but since having kids I dream about clutter free rooms in pure white with glass and clean lines everywhere and storage so you can't see anything.

Lol at the AstroTurf though! (Capitals inserted by autocorrect and they're quite amusing so they can stay)

Lucy61 · 30/04/2015 08:36

That's not a cinema room. It's a room with a projector.

Stairs look hazardous and everything in it looks cheap. Developers bog standard.

Trills · 30/04/2015 08:47

If you have spare rooms I can see why it might be nice to have.

Living room - TV might be on, but you can chat and pop in and out.

Cinema room - DO NOT DISTURB, serious watching hapening here.

likalixer · 30/04/2015 08:49

More sense than money? I agree, they're naff and the sort of thing a teenager hankers over.

Pagwatch · 30/04/2015 08:55

I'd fucking love a cinema room.

I have a big chill out room in the basement. I'm might make it into one.
