Where would you spend a million in London?

I have NCed for this. Would love some ideas/MN wisdom. if you have a budget of a million or thereabouts and wanted to buy a family house in London for a young family of 2 young girls where would you look? Can budget for independent school. Have been looking West but wanted some new ideas thrown out. Happy to go pretty urban... Too suburban would probably put us off.

But more I would love to here where YOU would go (or already are) and why. Need reasonable access to town for daily commute (West End/City). We have lived all over (but not with children, and now moving back from abroad)

I would do Kennington, but only the squares of Kennington park road which are lovely and full of young families (so the house you round which had sold would be perfect I think) Otherwise, north dulwich or west dulwich would be good, but they do feel much further out.

After looking at every flat as close as possible to central London this is the one in the nicest area IMO - that first picture is the view - if you want massively posh (and who wouldn't Xmas Wink) I'd climb over your dead granny for that one.

Yes, it's only 3 bedrooms but it's beautiful and just exquisite. Round corner from westminster boys/girls.

Where is optimum in East Dulwich? I don't know it at all. (I know West London and North well.. that is why this is so interesting for me!)

"2 eye catching turrets on the corner of St George's Mansion"

hiphophippity · 29/12/2014 21:56

Wow that flat. Beautiful. But I think i would struggle with 2 girls in a flat. I would rather less central (than that, gorgeous though it is) and a bit bigger.

Laurie that's a great spot to be. Easy walk to St James park. It's nice around there. There's a big sainsburys now at Victoria, so food shopping has improved a lot.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/12/2014 22:00

Make them like each other by sticking them both in the biggest bedroom (16 by 12feet) and having the other 2 bedrooms as your gin room and craft room Grin

minipie · 29/12/2014 22:00

hiphop Lordship Lane is the high street (with all the bugaboos and cafes) so I guess anywhere near there. But anywhere near a good state primary will be sought after too.

hiphophippity · 29/12/2014 22:03

With a gin room and a craft room i'd be laughing. butbutbutbut i want a front door. ridiculous but true. have spent the last few years in flats (albeit some beauties) in very urban locations around the world. trying to find a compromise for a family in london is proving harder than i expected. we could stretch our budget a bit but surely i can find something...

Camberwell Grove every time.

If East Dulwich, off Lordship Lane nearer Goose Green (closer to station) or right the other end, closer to Dulwich village.

LilMissSunshine9 · 29/12/2014 22:19

Another vote for Beckenham - stunning parks and less than half hr into central on the train. Very safe and definitely do not feel like your in London/ The high street is lovely and you can always pop down to Bromley for more shops. Also the Westfield on Croydon will be along in a yr or two. Good schools and you get more sq footage for your money.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/12/2014 22:21

I've just realised I read one of your posts wrong OP - your children are currently baby/toddler not aged 8 and 6 now.

I had it in my head that you wanted to be central-ish as they're sort of heading towards secondary/bit more independance.

You do want Nappy valley/ local community/nice cafes etc and not being able to walk back from the City via a pub.

I know very little about these areas apart from one mentioned which I think stands out as cool/great views/lovely parks and the most important thing, the river and the Clipper service (boat service that takes you up the river to Canary wharf/city/embankment)

So this house in Greenwich is my fave Grin

I'd just like to add that I know Camberwell fairly well, although not as a resident, and I would loathe it as a place to live. Camberwell Green is just awful and the shops are grim. Traffic is horrendous. All the Georgian architecture in the world wouldn't convince me it was a nice place to live. Ruskin Park is fine but there are many even lovelier London parks.

hiphophippity · 29/12/2014 22:27

Laurie you sold camberwell to me. you can't change your mind now Wink

i get what you are saying. but surely there are lots of people happily living reasonably centrally with young ones

Camberwell is excellent for kids. Lots of outstanding primaries. Burgess park is massive, has a tennis club, lovely cafe. Lots of families, a huge community, great people, loads of culture. Art galleries, students.

In fact, there are loads of parks (Ruskin, Lucas, Brunswick, Myatts Field), great swimming pool, brand new library about to open. On camberwell new rd there is a lovely Turkish supermarket, and do not get me started on the restaurants in the area, so good and so cheap, huge variety and some people travel to from all over London.

You can get anywhere in London in less than an hour from camberwell - white city to shoreditch, archway to tooting. And it's only going up. PM me if you want more info!
