You won't get any arguments from me about the economy being weaker than they claim. Don't the falling income tax takes prove that? They know damn well that unemployment falling is only because the jobs created are zero-hour and low-paid jobs. Public sector, very obviously, has been de-professionalising and forcing people to take lower pay for the same jobs since at least the 80's.

What are the government trying to prove? I really would prefer it if they said openly 'we're up shit creek without a paddle, life is going to be hard for a bit'. But they won't just come out and say that will they because it's only harder for those of us in the bottom levels. The middles have just started to be implicated but aren't feeling much yet due to their cushions.

I can only hope that they do have a plan - economy is all about confidence really - and that it works, but I rather agree with you there in the north. Sometimes I have difficulty believing that it's not an actual conspiracy to position themselves for the coming environmental meltdown. I try to remember that they're really just incompetent and far, far too sheltered.

Do you know that there were a lot of people on the net well before the 2007 crash warning? sending emails to mps . The experts knew better , I am talking 2005 onwards.

They should have made an example out of some of the worse banks and let them fail.

This isn't going to end well

I get the impression it's "I am alright Jack" trouble is Jack may not be safe this time.
Who knows what will happen if they try and make the poorest pay for the next round of cuts

Surely they must know this would provoke the masses

We all know the reason why teens have to stay on in education until they are 18 is the improvement it will create to the unemployment figures - they really do think we're stupid!

How long until they have those on benefits working for them rather than employing people to do the same work - it's going to get a whole lot worse isn't it SadAngry

FiveLittlePeas · 28/12/2014 09:34

God, all this sounds so much like Spain a few years ago it's terrifying...

sleepdodger · 28/12/2014 09:38

London is not the whole country
It's supply and demand- only a finite number can pay 500k for a 1 bed flat so it's natural demand drops
Round mids the popular locations still sell on price quickly with a gang if buyers on the doorstep...

roneik · 28/12/2014 11:24

A great swathe of this country has falling prices and in many areas they have not got back to 2007.

There are no gangs of buyers virtually anywhere in the UK. There were but that was before it turned

Fivelittlepeas good observation, we just don't allegedly have the unemployment levels. WE HAVE ZERO HOUR CONTRACTS/ PART TIME > ESCAPEES FROM THE JOB CENTRE GOING SELF EMPLOYED. We must not forget 56.000 SANCTIONS at the job centre each month. We probably have as many as 4 million plus underemployed parked or unemployed if the truth was ever told

My house appears to have gone up in value by £40k since we bought 3 years ago.
We do not live in the se.
We live in a non descript part of the East Midlands.
We have 2 years left on our fixed rate mortgage - I intend to use that 2 years to save as much as I can (won't be much sadly) and pay off our debts because I can foresee a time of 10% IR again.

roneik · 28/12/2014 11:48

Badz, I don't think it would take even a fraction of that projection to crash the whole economy. Not that I am saying you are wrong. We are going backwards in this country and soon it will reach a point where all hell breaks loose IMO
They need to start teaching basic economics in schools and some life skills from what I see and hear. No reflection on you by the way.

Scary times

LightningOnlyStrikesOnce · 28/12/2014 13:09

Scary indeed

newsfortherevolution.wordpress.com/2014/12/27/the-dow-at-18000-contradictions-mount-in-world-economy/

Always nice to find people with proper economic knowledge agreeing with me. Except that it might be better, this time, to be wrong.

Anyone read Lucas & Woodin "green alternatives to globalisation"?

noddyholder · 28/12/2014 13:11

The recovery Hmm if only whats to come is truly going to pull the rug from under so many

roneik · 28/12/2014 14:29

Talking of revolutions, not that what I will tell was one . I worked in the car industry and all through the recession we pumped out cars . Small cars granted, but people like with houses wanted to say "look I am all right "

While we also were paid a good wage because every year we improved productivity. The only reason the factory was shut was because it was near unaffordable to pay off French and German workforces. The world was producing too many vehicles .
Our government let Ford move car production abroad. What a narrow minded move, practically every year they have been the top selling car.
Whilst the French have always subsidized their car industry we let ours go. A good example is the new mini BMW , we build it and played a big part in design too. We let that go , why because we did not invest in plant design. Hardly any investment in any business now just corporate greed. In that instance at least we employ people to build the mini. It's a great little car, I know because I have one.
It's not working , the tinkering
though as we are near deflation. Henry Ford said "pay the workforce a decent wage and they can afford the product , and the company will prosper" That's a big part of the problem now. The governments past and present tinkered with tax credits and encouraged the landlords by subsidizing their rent demands . Had they not interfered then the economy would have been in better order.
Now they are trapped, people are buggered if they take tax credits away. They will also be buggered if they don't

It gave license to pay poverty wages and ensured declining living standards

It's over

OP posts:
noddyholder · 28/12/2014 15:54

I feel like it's over too

Baddz · 28/12/2014 16:00

I have no idea what's going to happen...I'm no economist...but it cannot go on this way.
I do worry about the future.
I can truly see the uk going back to how it was the 1930s :(
No welfare state, no NHS, decent schools only for those that can pay.
Sigh.

RandomMess · 28/12/2014 16:10

Geez I'm feeling depressed! I was hoping more like 50s/60s but I dread a return to the 30s Sad

roneik · 28/12/2014 17:45

A snip from an article in today's paper

“In order to deliver this scale of savings you are talking about having to find cuts in the unprotected budget of around a quarter in the next parliament.”

Even then the Conservatives will only achieve their goals if they find welfare cuts on a scale that “would hugely increase the levels of poverty in the country”.

I really hope my DDs continue to get along with each other and as a family we can share a house relatively harmoniously...

They won't be moving out any time in the next 20 years will they!

EddieReadersglasses · 28/12/2014 19:13

noddy do you mean the housing market or the economy in general?
How do you think housing market will be away from the SE where rises have been more modest?
We are in Scotland and currently deciding whether to stay in our existing sl too small house and move to our dream (more expensive) house where we will hopefully live forever-with all the kids too if required as would be big enough.
Threads like this giving me the heebie-jeebies!

EddieReadersglasses · 28/12/2014 19:14

Should read or move

RandomMess · 28/12/2014 19:16

If you already have a home and then sell & buy then in some respects you are cushioned. My worries are about the running costs of a larger home... we have moved and halved our mortgage but I reckon our running costs may double - eek!

TK1930 · 28/12/2014 19:52

Hi just wondering what advice you would give for someone in a position like random mess said?? We need to move to a larger house as we have outgrown our house... And want to move to better catchment for schools...
Hoping to move in next 6 months....??? Advice greatly appreciated!!!
