Why does my house smell like a cross between vomit, stinky cheese and bad breath?

And no, it's not because I've just had a party with the local branch of halitosis anonymous.

And I've cleaned the draining thing of the fridge - you know, the bit that water drains into. However, it did stink, and it may have been the source of the smell, but I'd have thought it would stop stinking once I'd cleaned it out.

I've cleaned everything and everywhere but still my house smells.

Back tomorrow to see if anyone has any ideas. Good night.

I was about to suggest a vase of flowers. They can really honk after a week or so.

(actually, in this house it's usually DS's trainers or the hamsters)

Hi all- yes I know this was a zombie thread- but it came up top of my many internet searches and was a complete life saver.

2 weeks ago the most hideous stink took over our kitchen area- and open plan room soon was whiffing all over- dining/sitting area. Poured bleach down drains/cleaned out every cupboard etc etc- nothing. Had pest control round as we do have rats in drains (thankfully not managed to get inside) the guy said he knew all realted mice/rat stinks and this definitely was not it.

Smell = like we'd had massive block of stinking bishop/ Parmesan and pints of curdled gone off milk sat out of fridge horrendous. Bought dozens air fresheners/plug ins/scented candles as the only was to live through it.
Finally after seeing this thread we called a guy to take out our huge and heavy integrated larder fridge- took an hour and DH had to stay off work to help him. Even as he begun he was so unconvinced it could be the source of the smell, I honestly didn't really believe it myself- but lo and behold- as so many on here said- it was the foul drip tray at back of the fridge. Full to the top with orange/yellow gunky liquid collected over past few years. A little tub of open bbq sauce had also managed to fall through fridge into it... so this stink was being piped out to the kitchen through the fridge heater. Was so ecstatic we got the source!!

So if any doubt- please check this- even if it means hiring a kitchen fitter/handyman- it is so worth it.

My dad's house smelled of this suddenly and it was dead rats under the floor!
