painting an ornate mirror, annie sloan colour advice please

I have a Large mirror in my hall, its not a nice colour wood, but the detailing is nice. I cant use traditional white and duck egg paris grey type delicate tones .. I have a gutsy coloured carpet, involving orange and deep burgundy and mustard stripes.. (NOT awful, honestly! ).. I want to paint the mirror and dark wax it so that the detailing is emphasised, and the ugly wood is all gone.

layering colours? I like versailles and would like to use two shades, for extra depth and a bit of sanding can make the mirror look more 3d.
Ive been googling for ages and cant see what I'm aiming for, which is something neutral/green ish/stone ish but not delicate..and starting to feel loopy.

SO turning to creatives here, for advise.

Any ideas?

Tbh I think you'll need to use spray paint to get right into the detailing and get rid of the wood colour. You could do an Annie slon paint over the top after spraying.

That's interesting I thought the dark wax would bring out the detailing.

I like spraying things, have done it with other furniture.

I've just ordered samples of Versailles, old white, and country grey, and some liming wax..so we'll see!

I've gone with quite conservative colours, unusually for me.

A friend of mine recently told me about the mess her husband made of a similar sounding mirror. He couldn't get into all the crevices properly with the brush and his efforts to do so left a combination of thick paint in spots and remnants of the old colour in others. I did an ornate mirror myself but did it in a single colour using a spray. It was easy enough to blank out the old colour. Unless you want to keep some of the old wood colour in the crevices I'd suggest spraying first, possibly in white, to blank it out. Then do the Annie Sloan colour, followed by the wax and/or sanding do bring out the detailing.

Thankyou , that's helpful. From your friends husbands mistake, I think what I'll learn is that I need to dilute the paint on the ornate areas, to get coverage.

I've ordered the products now, the liming wax has arrived... I do want the end result to be distressed.

I'll do several thin washes rather than typical AS 'slap it on' technique.
