velux in a new pitched roof, is your ceiling pitched as well or flat

new extension is permitted 3m depth from house and we are re-using 3 velux along the 7m width.

not sure whether to have the ceiling inside pitched or flat. keeping it flat will supposedly reduce the amount heat from sunlight, but maybe reduce light into lounge. but pitched might make space seem bigger, with more light, but more heat. extension is kind of SE so not excessively hot, but summer mornings are very hot for a while.

choice of ceiling dictates choice of lighting and I'm no where near making mind up.

what do you have and why? would you change it???

I'm having it pitched becasue I like the feeling of space it gives. I'll put blinds on the velux in case its too hot/bright in the Summer.

I cant say yet if I'm happy with it as we're only at foundation stage.

Ooh I hadn't even considered that on our build (still at foundations stage at the moment). We are in the same boat, facing south. I guess I would go for the pitched roof to make it seem more spacious - you could always open the windows (doors? Bifolds?) if the room gets warm?

Pitched gives a lovely feeling of space, and it doesn't get overly warm - probably because it's quite a steep pitch.

Pitched here too, 3m by 9m so similar size. I love how big it makes it feel.

I'd go for pitched for the feeling of space and light. If you open the windows it should help with keeping the temperature down a bit.

thanks all, I'm inclined toward pitched too. we've high ceilings in the rest of the house so think it would look better too.

We had very slightly pitched, just the minimum you need, a foot or so. This meant that there was the max possible headroom at the lower end.

what kind of lighting do you have in the pitch then?

we will end up with an L Shaped kitchen/diner. kitchen in one majority of one half, and diner on the far end of the other, with full height glass doors to lounge and 3m of these new slide pivot doors to the garden.

I'm happy with downlighters for the kitchen area but wanted something cosier above the dining table, which will now also have to take account of the pitch

We are having pendants over dining table in our new pitched roof extrnsion. We have 5 veluxes and bifolds and there is a huge amount of insulation in the roof, so doesn't seem to get too hot (don't know about cold yet as not quite finished). Am very happy with the vaulted ceiling though.

Pendants with very extended chains! If you do use downlights, make sure they're LED and won't need changing often.

A pitched roof can be well-insulated under and between the rafters, and will look better with velux windows and a pitched ceiling.

It will also feel more spacious and airy, though the warm air will rise so you'll need diffuse heating.

However you will probably have to have a "cut roof" made up by a carpenter on site from lengths of timber. This will cost more than modern W-shaped factory-made trussed rafters, but will look much better. For a small extension the cost may not be very different, but you are more dependent on on-site craftsmanship and good design.

Pitched. Feels much larger area than when had previous flat roof on.
Imagine it costs more to heat, but haven't noticed it being colder or anything.
Extension also wasn't built so the ceiling heights would match the existing building (even though it would only have taken an extra couple of courses!) so it helps disguise the difference too.

We have pitched with 4 wall lights.
2 on the back wall (the original outside wall) and 1 on each side wall half way down.

We have pendants over the table, downlighters (and agree heartily with pp who said to put leds in!) and a wall light. It is a very big room tho ( double height pitch) and I like the different moods you get from lighting combinations

Here is a picture of the pitched roof over our dining table with pendants. We have down lighters in the kitchen part with a fable end and pendants over island also on a pitch. Excuse mess!

Not the best angle but gives idea of space it creates , we went for 2 massive velux and our is similar size to yours (3x6)

I would add though you can get done really nice modern roof lanterns now for flat roofs
