Why are almost all new kitchens grey?

Just wondering - in our most recent search we viewed about 50 properties, about half of which were recently renovated, all with new kitchens, all of which were grey. It's attractive but not entirely my cup of tea and was just wondering why it was so popular!

how do I see your profile Audrey!!! that sounds good - I've always liked white worktops too - what material did you use?

littleredsquirrel · 21/02/2014 15:13

My new kitchen is being installed in two weeks' time and whilst I've spent most waking hours over the past six months pouring over design websites I haven't gone for grey. I've gone for white though which is just as boring.

I'm having white painted units with lots of glass. Wallpaper inside the glass cupboards. White honed marble backsplash tiles, walnut worktops and walnut flooring. Glass handles and glass light fittings. I hope it looks as beautiful as it does in my head!

@ Forago - I may have spoken too hastily as I've been trying to upload a photo of my kitchen but i keep getting error messages. Don't think it's because of size, as I tried to re-size to the minimum I could (below 100KB). I've emailed Mumsnet, maybe they can help. Please bear with me, hopefully I will have it uploaded on my profile soon.

noddyholder · 21/02/2014 15:50

littlered it sounds beautiful

audrey01 · 21/02/2014 15:52

Sorry, just to say our main worktop is dark brown (we have Silestone Marron Jupiter), but we also added a white worktop surround that contrasts with the dark brown main worktop used for the kitchen island/peninsula. Material used is a white Silestone which is not too polished (wanted a leather finish, not too shiny) but you can obviously use Corian (as it is more mouldable).

Pagwatch · 21/02/2014 15:58

Mine is new and not grey. Do you want to see it (again)
Do you, do you?

here

TunipTheUnconquerable · 21/02/2014 16:01

That's rather nice, Pagwatch.
I bet it's always that clean and tidy, yes?

noddyholder · 21/02/2014 16:03

Pag I am green blue with envy

TunipTheUnconquerable · 21/02/2014 16:06

I very much like the little Mumsnetting station in the corner, too

Pagwatch · 21/02/2014 16:07

Haha - even the dogs arn't that clean.
The funny thing was the homemade cupcakes and cleanliness were just very lucky. Normally the 'can we come and take photos' call would have resulted in a low level breakdown.

I have to say Roubdhouse were quite astonishingly brilliant. The nky problems were curtesy of my builder.

My new one kitchen is gloss white, black granite, lime green glass splash backs, grey floor. White walls and ceiling.

When its dark I have colour changing LEDs that come on automatically.

It is a long narrow galley kitchen you have to walk through to get to ground floor WC so saves turning on lights and adds interest.

It looks like the cabinets are sort of space ship hovering about 10 cm off the floor. I have a TV and a sound system in there too.

All I need is a mirror ball and its a nightclub.

I always knew I wasn't fashionable Grin. My kitchen is olive.

yourlittlesecret · 21/02/2014 16:12

It reminds me of the fashion for whisper grey bathroom suites in the 1980s.
It Will Date very quickly.
I'm just getting a new kitchen and was looking at a big display kitchen, in grey, kitchen man said everyone was buying grey.....

Love it Pagwatch.
There was a smoky green I liked but I have decided to buy a cream kitchen and paint the walls smoky green instead.

I must take some before and after photos.

MoreBeta · 21/02/2014 16:13

Pag - I hadn't realised the picture was actually your kitchen. I thought it was a show room mock up. V. nice indeed.

I bet those white surfaces would not be good for an OCD sufferer though.

truelymadlysleepy · 21/02/2014 16:15

Pagwatch it's a stunning kitchen Envy

WhatKatyDidnt · 21/02/2014 16:19

Beautiful kitchen Pag. Love your pooch too!

member · 21/02/2014 16:24

Why oh why do I always click on kichen threads when I won't be able to afford to do ours for years?? Envy

VivaLeBeaver · 21/02/2014 16:35

I have a pale/mint green kitchen with cherry wood work surfaces. Bit different and I like it.

Forago · 21/02/2014 16:50

pag love the blue - what is the white work surface made out of?

littleredsquirrel · 21/02/2014 16:53

How is it that its nicer to look at other peoples kitchens than at any other room? I love to see other people's kitchens.

Forago · 21/02/2014 16:55

Audrey I wanna see your kitchen wahaahah!!!

Pagwatch · 21/02/2014 17:13

It's a composite Forago - we looked at marble etc but DS1 and2 are really sloppy cooks. It looks ok and it's really hard wearing. We put the same worktop in the butlers pantry so it kind of links the two rooms.

Yy MoreBeta. It's so nice when it's clean but I'm so glad I don't need it to be

noddyholder · 21/02/2014 17:36

I am still more envious of the dog than any kitchen though

audrey01 · 21/02/2014 20:51

Forago - if you're still interested, I managed to upload a picture of my finished kitchen here.

Forago · 21/02/2014 20:54

I am - appreciate the effort! i couldnt quite visualise what you meant by the dark wood round the applicances - i like that 2 tone effect! and definitely still loving the matt white.
