What will be the Avocado bathroom of the future?

I'm doing a whole house & am questioning my taste. I know opinions are subjective but could you help with your ideas?
So far I'm thinking

-not stone everywhere e.g. whole bathrooms full of Travertine
-not down lighters everywhere
-no feature walls I can't wallpaper anyway
Any ideas would be very welcome.

I have a roof terrace with sea and roof top views Hate gardening too like that I can hoover it and plug things in on it!

RenterNomad · 29/11/2013 14:29

I agree about hating gardening. I can scarcely "keep control" of a house: adding a much-woollier, entirely-entropic room just threatens me with nervous breakdown!

RenterNomad · 29/11/2013 14:30

noddy, just read what you said about hoovering your outdoor space and just craved it.

LaQueen - but the TV is only very small and its in the kitchen so I can watch/listen to tasteful music and cultural programming while I'm cooking.

Its not like a 56" plasma with Sky Sports that one is going in the basement for the DSs in their chill out space as that would be too tacky for words.

The AGA had to go though - it was dark blue. Far too country kitchen.

Now my kitchen is like an operating theatre. Its pristine white cupboards floor to ceiling with black granite, walls and ceilings painted white, grey non slip floor tiles, ceiling spot lamps with stainless steel everywhere and lime green glass splashbacks and no one is allowed in there but me. The drawers will be filled with carefully selected and arranged utensils and equipment. This is for carrying out serious cooking in not for hanging about in drinking wine.

You know how women lie to their DH about how much clothes and shoes cost and hide them in their wardrobe. I am doing that with my kitchen. DW will never know. Blush

Of course if it is your forever home then you must do what you like! Don't listen to me - am in the process of making my forever(ish) home and have spent a few months scouring the web/picking plumbers brains for any taps that aren't shiny chrome (fookin' hate having to polish them and the fact they make everything look so 90's) which is a personal bugbear of mine. Most people can't seem to get enough of it though, so I am in a minority with my antique brass taps even the builder said he thought they were 'horrible', but then that made me more adamant to put them in Wink

LaQueen
you'd like the house a friend has : Georgian, massive, courtyard garden, opening onto communal garden that is maintained by the owners of the properties opposite Smile

noddyholder · 29/11/2013 16:20

I have pots of lavender and bamboo recycled grey plastic flooring and white walls and black railings with a big balinese bench. In summer lanterns and indian floor cushions No beds or grass is great.

HalleLouja · 29/11/2013 16:27

My kitchen which has nearly been put it might date in a few years but I love it.

Its German style (handless) in a matt finish with laminate worktops. We do have down lighters but they are LEDs so won't be killing our electricity bill.

HalleLouja · 29/11/2013 16:28

Am not a fan of karndean / amtico made to look like wood / stone. Think that will date.

So will those toilet metro style tiles.

noddyholder · 29/11/2013 16:38

Metro tiles have been around forever I don't think they will date as those who slavishly follow fashion will be ripping them out shortly and moving on to the next thing

RenterNomad · 29/11/2013 17:05

YY to lavender. It's the only plant which it's rewarding to cut/prune. Grin

I have a dark blue Aga in a country kitchen, agree that is the best place for them.

Couldn't live without grass, just cannot imagine not seeing green and lots of it Smile.

Yes I agree as long as they aren't lime green or red. If you match them with units they look lovely.

We trie and tried to find a period property, but there just wasn't one where we were looking when we bought last year. We tried to view three but they were all off the market before we could see them :(

So we have a newish build (but part of the attraction was that it is very traditional in design, fewer good size rooms rather than a million shoe-horned in en suites, nice wooden bannisters). The DIY is ongoing, so far no travertine though!

I think decking-for-the-sake-of-it will date. In some gardens it works very well. We are going for the comfy-eighties-traditional look because we prefer that to ultramodern (and it would be impractical to go openplan: I'd be annoyed by the lack of space division/soundproofing...

Cheap shiny chrome for def

Decking and UPVC conservatory

Anything/deco styling from Next

Brick pavers to the whole of your frontage and fake stone (Bradstone style) walls around the patio.

Aga's no they are timeless same as woodburners.

Gingersstuff · 01/12/2013 23:56

We have a really old Georgian cottage type thing. Log burner in the lounge, stripped wooden floors, blah blah. Big shaggy cream rug was the worse for wear so I stupidly ordered a new rug, 2 wall canvases and a couple of cushions from Next. And now my formerly quirky-but-cosy room looks shite Sad.
And i haven't even paid for it all yet SadSad
