What will be the Avocado bathroom of the future?

I'm doing a whole house & am questioning my taste. I know opinions are subjective but could you help with your ideas?
So far I'm thinking

-not stone everywhere e.g. whole bathrooms full of Travertine
-not down lighters everywhere
-no feature walls I can't wallpaper anyway
Any ideas would be very welcome.

That's what I thought Eeyore, and it was great when dc were small, but I never loved the house,

Nail on head, laq, nail on head.
Quirky rules.
And anything other than ultra modern looks daft in a new build, it just does.

Yes to convenience, easy to keep clean etc. But I found it a soulless compromise.

TheCrackFox · 28/11/2013 22:08

Don't do it La Queen. We moved into a new build for 18 months and hated it. Yes, it was lovely moving into somewhere and just unpacking but it got boring very quickly as there was no challenge and it was quite bland.

None of your furniture will go, that's for sure.

The one time I let my head make the decision to buy was the sodding New build. It was the sensible thing to do but I never loved living there. It was just so homogenous and everyone who bought one was the same age, income bracket blah, blah, blah. I felt very claustrophobic.

It was an expensive mistake because, in a rising market, period properties go up in value far quicker than New builds. Especially if you are in an area with a lot of new builds that have still to be finished because then your home will have lost its USP (brand spanking new).

Talkinpeace · 28/11/2013 22:23

I'd LOVE a new build - so long as I was in charge of the build from the ground up.
I would never, ever consider buying from a modern developer because they are "constructing profit making units" not building homes.

My Mum gets stressy because our cloakroom straddles the old and new bits of the houses so the walls do not line up.
Yup. I like it that way.
The extra arch in the dining room hides where the house had to be held up with ACROs for a few days

my next house will either be bought as a bare plot and built or a wreck and rebuilt
my last three houses have all needed major work - thats what makes them mine

Lizzylou · 28/11/2013 22:25

Yup. You know it makes sense.
You don't like vast rooms, think vast minimalist rooms with just underfloor heating, no character.

Farrow and Ball/Laura Ashley have no real place in new builds. Sorry.

AliceinSlumberland · 28/11/2013 22:48

Can I just say, I never new that open plan was cold, and always pined after it. This thread has changed my life! I hate being cold so it's definitely off the list now.

AliceinSlumberland · 28/11/2013 22:48

That should be knew obviously.

Why are you moving LaQueen? I thought you were in love with your Georgian house?

New builds are souless without a doubt but they do have their plus points.

Our house is hundreds of years old and it bloody looks it! Lots of maintenance and all so expensive. Completely impractical but unique. Whenever I look through house magazines I am always, always drawn to the old ones despite my best attempts to embrace modern!

What I would really love next is stone, wood and iron built from old materials and quirky but new. Best of both worlds.

NotSureMaybeUpTDuff · 28/11/2013 23:25

I have no worries that our house is to be become unfashionable, it's been that way since I moved in.

We've got an avocado bathroom.

With a sunken bath

And peach carpet.

This was DPs house before I moved in, the bathroom was on my immediate hit list, but it's a big room, in an old house and will cost a mint to re-do. All my mates love it though. Yy to whoever up there who said it's very Dynasty. I've jus tried to mitigate it a bit with a milk Choc/taupey colour paint and some neutral type accessories with a Danish tile top table and gplan chair.

If someone desperately wants an avo bathroom suite, pm me pronto. Grin I've probably outed myself now, there can't be more than one bathroom like ours in the country.

Has anyone said the bathrooms that look like something out of a prison cell? White square fittings with lots of metal work. I'm house hunting at the moment & I get really depressed every time I see one of these.

noddyholder · 29/11/2013 11:41

I agree laqueen I like that look very much I have been renovating houses for about 17 yrs now and have not changed the final product at all in that time.

Replying to orig question

Wet rooms
Decking
Open plan living spaces
Random raised bits to denote new space/area
Island units which are too big
Spot lights

msmoss · 29/11/2013 12:23

I'd like a new build but only if I could build it myself on a plot that would allow for a decent size garden.

noddyholder · 29/11/2013 13:02

Greyswood do some good new builds

MoreBeta · 29/11/2013 13:21

Arrrrrgh..... this is the thread from hell!

I just had a travertine floor in a bathroom fitted 3 days ago and have about 30 new downlighters scattered about the house, new shutters, fresh F&B greige walls everywhere, wall mounted TV and a WHITE GLOSS KITCHEN all newly fitted!

I binned the AGA and now you tell me it was a classic!

What about the proper cast iron claw footed bath that went in this morning - that must be a classic too?
