What will be the Avocado bathroom of the future?

I'm doing a whole house & am questioning my taste. I know opinions are subjective but could you help with your ideas?
So far I'm thinking

-not stone everywhere e.g. whole bathrooms full of Travertine
-not down lighters everywhere
-no feature walls I can't wallpaper anyway
Any ideas would be very welcome.

Our tv is mounted on a bracket on the wall. If we want a new telly we just unhook the old one and hook up the new one. Easy

PigletJohn · 24/11/2013 09:49

...if you want it in exactly the same place.

Geckos48 · 24/11/2013 11:11

Wall mounted TV's will not be 'here to stay' technology is moving swiftly to a point where projection screens will replace TV's entirely.

Belize · 24/11/2013 11:33

Ok yes but the principle is here to stay.

Geckos48 · 24/11/2013 12:27

Well so is the principle of baths, toilets and flooring!

Anyway you'd have to be incredibly picky to not buy a house because of a wall mounted tv!

NoArmaniNoPunani · 24/11/2013 12:35

...if you want it in exactly the same place.

We don't live in a big enough house to have a choice.

PigletJohn · 24/11/2013 14:10

I was thinking more "in the middle of the right hand wall of the living room" might one day turn into "in the left hand corner of the living room" or "on the back wall of the living room"

I've known people shift their furniture around.

NigellasGuest · 24/11/2013 14:14

Where are these people who have baths in their bedrooms?
I've never come across that in my life!

EeyoreIsh · 24/11/2013 14:15

I'm with piglet having flexibility to move things around is ace. We've added picture rail to our dining room (it fits the period of the house) and it's great for moving pictures around as we want.

Talkinpeace · 24/11/2013 16:39

my kitchen (pic on my profile) is clearly a no no then Grin

and I adore my UPVC conservatory : it is full to the roof with plants - there is one small stool to sit on because conservatories are for plants

main TV is on a long arm so can be shut away in its cupboard for when we want to get a life

noddyholder · 24/11/2013 16:54

Oh no wall mounted tvs are already a pita!

Reastie · 24/11/2013 16:56

talkin I had a nose at your kitchen. I think it looks really nice. I also think you are looking amazing Envy

willotess · 24/11/2013 17:37

A couple of my soft furnishing clients have baths in their bedrooms. One, at the end of their bed with free standing taps and on twist pile carpet.
The other has the bath in an alcove surrounded by windows, for which I have made Roman blinds, so she can lie back and look at the view. The bedroom carpet stops at the alcove and the egg shaped bath is on a wooden floor.

RenterNomad · 24/11/2013 19:45

There was a rental near us with a bath in the master bedroom. It screamed "high maintenance", "built-in condensation problems" and also "short-term landlord". We declined.

Belize · 24/11/2013 21:38

noddy why are they a pain? I love mine, up there away from us. It wasn't that long ago that we got rid of our last humongous box like telly - this wafer thin mounted tv fad is wonderful for me Smile.

Sympathywherehaveyougone · 24/11/2013 22:41

Big glass box extensions on period homes. Think these will look DIRE in a few years and be akin to those 60s extensions on period houses.
Very large waste of money imho. They look pretty crap already.

Baths in bedrooms was spearheaded by Babington House's designers I suspect so been around a fair while. Silly idea.

Anything that ends up on the cover of a B&Q/ Homebase catalogue is probably going to look dated in a few years. The cycle of fashion means that things that have become very mainstream and cheap are close to the end of 'fashionable'.

It's a shame when something classic is highjacked to become uber-cool and then looks passe after a while too.

Anatanacoat · 25/11/2013 07:04

We got rid of the tv entirely and use a pico projector. Brilliant for lying on your back in bed and watching stuff on the ceiling, but I accept unless you have a central server it might be a bit of a pain otherwise.

Suspect once someone puts one of these in a wifi lightbulb tvs will disappear.

NotCitrus · 25/11/2013 07:26

So what lighting should I put in my kitchen extension other than downlighters which seem to be the only option available? House is Edwardian, kitchen will be traditional but with huge skylight in the middle.

Beige travertine tiles definitely dated.

PigletJohn · 25/11/2013 09:30

downlighters which seem to be the only option available

You live in a town where pendants and luminaires are unobtainable?
Why would an Edwardian house want holes in the ceilings?

Belize · 25/11/2013 10:15

I have an old cottage and not a downlighter in sight. We use little table lamps in corners (of the kitchen too) and you could use lovely standard lamps? I see no reason not to use those in kitchens tbh. Much better than downlighters in an old house.

Quangle · 25/11/2013 12:55

I have downlighters in my Georgian house because the ceilings are so low (I can touch them and I'm 5ft 6), there isn't room for anything hanging from the ceiling and in the kitchen at least, you need lots of good lighting so table lamps wouldn't suffice and as it's a kitchen, no room on the wall (cabinets) for lots of wall lights. In the other rooms the ceilings are a bit higher so have one or two nicer things including wall lights which I do really like and they cast a nicer light than downlighter halogens.

loraflora · 25/11/2013 17:06

I have an avocado downstairs loo. DH wants to change it. I secretly like it apart from the cheapo taps. Laminate will date if it hasn't already, and the cheapest stuff is horrible. I've been looking at so many estate agent details and all the so called modernised houses have laminate, downlighting and travertine bathrooms. They all look the same, hence they will all look dated. I like metro tiles but I suspect they will date too.

Graceparkhill · 25/11/2013 17:13

I think the Belfast sink will date before long.

Talkinpeace · 25/11/2013 17:14

if you have low ceilings, do away with ceiling lights all together and use strategically placed uplighters and table lamps.

Apartments in New York do not have ceiling lights generally.

Wood burning stoves.

It said so in the Telegraph :)
