Need a carpet to go with pale grey walls and Victorian tiles...

We have Victorian tiles in our new house hallway that are brown/slate grey/cream in colour. Once I can find a pale enough grey for the hallway and landing walls we need to recarpet (currently blue..nice). Everything I have looked at is either an oatmeal based colour that I don't think will work with pale grey or it is too dark and a slate grey. I don't want to go too light or think the stairs will look mucky but too dark and the landing which is very narrow and long will look gloomy...what would you put down? Am hoping to find a flecked carpet with some grey undertones as the flecks will hide fluff and crumbs!

I have exactly what you describe and went for grey stripes. Piccies on my blog if you scroll down three or four posts. Www.colporter.tumblr.com

That looks lovely. I like a stripe (mainly I'm wearing them)' but worry that as the house is wonky the stripes will also be wonky and might not line up. Did you have a wonky house or was it pretty straight?

I mean wonky on the landing!

I think they would always lay the stripes in line even if you have a wonky house/stairs etc otherwise that would look rubbish. I am sure ours was probably not altogther even but the stripes are straight and then on the diagonal on the turn of the stairs.
