Farrow and Ball - whites shades for bedroom please

could anyone advise me on which farrow and ball shades of white would look good on the walls/ceiling/woodwork of an east-facing bedroom?

actually, there are windows on both walls come to think of it, so does that make it an east-west facing bedroom? Confused by all this orientation lark and perhaps overthinking things!

i wanted a very calm, peaceful room and there are no colour consultants in n. ireland from what i can see from the website but i reckoned id find an expert or two on here!

the views are very lush and green from the windows so maybe a hint of green would work too

Satin Slipper. Warm and soft but not pinky. Worked everywhere, definitely the best imo of all (the many) F&B "whites" I used. Country house, lots of grass, lots of big trees. Those were the days.

If you are happy to go more downmarket, a very good alternative in similar settings is Ivory from B&Q. No kidding.

In any case, ceiling : brilliant white, woodwork : satin rather than gloss, walls : matt.
I can be a lot more bossy if you want.

Idreamof - flipping beat me to it! Just did lounge in exactly same scheme. Looks gorgeous. Slipper satin is lovely though not white. It is more of a light greige but looks cream in certain lights.

oh marvellous, that's what i was after, the bossier the better because i'm feeling overwhelmed!

when you say brilliant white for the ceiling is that a farrow and ball shade or would any brand do?

dh thinks im insane and has been muttering "what do you mean different shades of white?!"

Pointing is the most white white f & b do. My ds's bedroom furniture is all pointing and looks lovely - clean and warm not cold looking.

Actually, Pointing isn't the whitest F&B White, the whitest is All White (which in a large area does look very white), followed by Wimborne White, then Pointing which is their lightest cream/ White (and their best selling White).
Pointing is as described above clean but not cold and not too yellow, slipper satin is slighty darker with a greyer tone.
All F & B paint really changes depening on your light, so best to try a tester pot before you buy as what works in one persons house will look different in another's (or even from one Rooney to another).

Marvonia, I would say any brand in brilliant white (matt). In fact the more boring brands tend to have the more neutral brilliant white, which is more suitable I think.
Pointing, (sorry Chub) is also a lovely colour, but will look yellow next to Satin Slipper.

Aggree with Soonbesailing on All White, if you insist on having only F&B.
Beware of their descriptions, because they really are quite subjective.
Again, good suggestion to try with a sample pot and see how you like it with different lights, and other colours in the room, the changes can be quite startling.

But I can really vouch for Satin Slipper, it's a sure fire. NOT grey. Try it.

i have all white, pointing,wimbourne white in my house and i put them in that order of whiteness.

Brilliant white in trade dulux. Brighter than standard white and gives lovely contrast with slipper satin. I didnt think there was much point getting expensive ceiling paint. Let us know how you get on. By the way, i did not bother with tester but went from mn advice. Risky but it is a colour you cant go wrong with. I spent 50 quid on samples for the lounge but nothing worked due the light. Greys seemed too blue and cold and taupes too green and sludgey. SS was the perfect combination of both.

Yes, woodwork in Slipper Satin eggshell.

I agree, this is a very soothing thread.

If you love slipper satin I would go with it on the woodwork as well, agree that you could use something like Dulux on ceiling but would suggest trade White rather than brilliant White as brilliant White has a blue whitener added to it which is why it can look cold in some lights.

Have to disagree with wfrances, wimbourne White is lighter than pointing and I do know my stuff as I work selling paint wallpaper etc and have done F & B training, so I really know their colours well.

Although we only sell expensive brands of paint, I can fully understand why cheaper paint is often a great option. My own home is def not only F& B infact I use more Little Greene than anything, but I also have lots of trade White as well.

I would also always try tester pots first, but 3 max I would never buy paint based on how it looks in someone else's house, but then I have experienced many people's tales of disappointment when they have painted a room the wrong colour.

now here's another question - i have 3 sons, they'll have a bedroom each, i was thinking either slipper satin, borrowed light or joa's white for their rooms

one of the rooms has a large alcove walk-in dressing area - would you do this the same colour or go for a different shade. If the walls were slipper satin what shade would you do the alcove?

Personally I wouldn't use slipper satin on the woodwork. IMHO woodwork should be white (satin or eggshell). Be careful what you buy - most water based eggshell/satin is rubbish, but some oil based ones can go yellow. Sikkens Rubbol Satura is a great woodwork paint - oil based satin, won't yellow, lasts very well.

I would paint the ceiling standard "trade white" - NOT brilliant white as it's too glaring/cold. Dulux Ultimatt is good, or use F&B All White if you must.

Slipper Satin is a lovely colour for the walls. You could also consider Skimming Stone (which is a bit darker but still light).

IMO Wimborne White and Pointing are equally light/dark but Wimborne White is creamier/cleaner and Pointing has a slightly greyer/more subtle tone.

For your sons' rooms - Borrowed Light is lovely. Slipper Satin seems a shame if that's what you have in your room. I'm not a big fan of Joa's White but then I don't like the browny whites that F&B do. How about Strong White, White Tie, Cornforth White, Skimming Stone, Elephant's Breath (bit darker this one).

Guest Bedroom - Slipper Satin
Hall, Stairs & Landing - Skimming Stone
Open plan kitchen/dining/family - Elephant's Breath (looks fantastic!)
Sitting Room - Maybe Brassica Statement Wall & Skimming Stone
Study - Still dithering.....

Can I also put a word in for other paint companies which don't have the F&B marketing machine but are equally good paint (many say better ) - Little Greene in particular has some lovely colours. Also Sanderson and Paint & Paper Library.

trotting off to look at little greene and the others you suggested minipie, although i don't know that i should be feeding my current paint obsession...

myron, they sound like lovely choices - i found my colour chart this morning and ive been pouring over it for longer than is seemly

I second minipie with lg - absolutely beautiful colours. Only used fb for one room And lg for the rest. Take a look at pearl light and pearl mid for bedrooms- gorgeous grey/blue/green. They have different intensities for their classic colours. If you get lg from leyland sdm, 45 quid for 5l, which is much cheaper than anywhere else selling lg.

Agree with white woodwork as the beauty of the wall colour stands out more.

Word of advice - fb and lg paints are a bugger to clean. For high traffic areas, consider the wipeable version.

Have pointing and slipper satin on woodwork and doors and SS is definitely greyish in certain lights whereas pointing could never be. I love them both btw.

Just to add - Dulux Timeless is a lovely warm white, no yellow very clean.

soonbesailing, I absolutely love and prefer Little Greene to Farrow and Ball - better coverage, much thicker. Do you have any LG recommendations for warm comfortable whites for a low ceilinged suburban home? This thread's f&b descriptions are brilliant, am looking for some similar go-to shades from Little Greene.
