Bishops Stortford - what can you tell me?

Thank you to everyone for helping with our relocation thus far. I've seen some amazing villages and homes on Rightmove :)

I think we're going to concentrate on settling in Bishop's Stortford. It looks (over the internet) to be a nice area, lovely greenery, good schools, commuter friendly etc.

Can anyone recommend a particular area within BS or advise against a particular area in BS? I'd prefer not to be in the Stansted flight path.

Thanks in advance.

We used to live in Thorley Park (now in St Michaels Mead). I wouldn't call it chavvy, but there are some in Stortford who are snobby about it. There are lots of pretty standard 3 and 4 bed family homes and plenty of green space. You won't get double garages, large gardens or huge plots, and houses off Villier sur Marne rarely seem to have ensuites.

There are a few roads that look a bit shabby off Villier sur Marne, but you could probably spot this on Google maps. You get teenagers hanging round sainsburys and the park in the evening but they seem fairly harmless. The roads off Friedberg Ave just seem a little less crowded and the houses are slightly newer and larger.

In terms of schools, Richard Whittington has a less positive reputation than Manor Fields or Thorley Hill so have a look at how close you will be to the primary school you want.

Thorley Park doesn't seem chavvy to me. bits around Elizabeth Rd/Piggots way are a bit rough, as well as previously mentioned Apton Rd/Waytemore area.

The villages just outside Stortford are nice and some of them have stations themselves such as Elsenham. I live near there and do like it round there. The schools are small and good and its nice. There are some good facilities and its reasonably easy to get into London (expensive though).

Hi there we also looking at BS as a possible place to live Moving in Jan with 3 young kids from Brisbane. Did any of you end up moving to BS? If so how did you get on? We need 3/4 house. Hubby will commute to Clerkenwell. Eldest will be 6 and will need a school. I noticed only 2 schools had places available which is worrying. Are school nursery places easy to get? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

There's nothing wrong with the Cavell Drive area at all - I have a flat there we bought a while ago.

I like the fact you can just cut through to the lovely Warwick Road and walk to the train station or further into the town centre, much more convenient than a lot of the town.

Hi all

Sorry, I know this thread is old but I was wondering iof anyone knew what Thornbers Road is like in BS? We are looking at moving in the near future and a place has come up there that looks nice.... just have no idea about the area!

Thanks in advance!

Sorry to add to this thread six months later!

Thornbera road (the new part), Thornbera Gardens etc. were built by Boyd Gibbons, late 1950s. Back then Boyd Gibbons were the Wimpey of the day, although are now seen slightly more favourably. Those living in Thorley Park Road, Park Lane and Thorley Hill looked down on the new Thornbera Road. Later (1980s), those in the new Thornbera Road looked down on the new 'Thorley' estate :-)

Thornbera Road is actually two roads. The original pre war part, running from Thorley Hill, is seen in the same light as Thorley Hill etc. You can still see where the road was extended, then joined a new part of Thorley Park Road (beyond no. 50). Back in the day, there were posts in the road between the old and new parts of Thornbera Road. Pedestrian access only. Same at the bottom of Thorley Hill, just before Salisbury Close.

Hi,
We are planning to move to BS soon. We have looked at a Property on a Private road called Boundary road which is not far from Herts and Essex school and nearer to the station.
Any idea how the area is? Hoping to get my daughter into Herts and Essex. the nearest primary is Thorn Grove. Any idea how good it is. It will be in the middle of the year and we are going to find it difficult to get a place.
Any suggestions welcome.

This thread makes me homesick. I was brought up in Stansted (Stansted Village as its called now to distinguish it from the airport) & went to school in BS, Margaret Dane school which is now Birchwood.
Stansted is a really lovely place to live, it's about 4 miles from BS. my dad still lives there & I'd move back in a heartbeat if I could.
Stansted is great for commuting too.

Hi, been reading this thread with much interest as we're looking at moving to BS too. Saw a house in Cavell Drive that we really like but we hear/read contradictory information about that area. One big question mark is why have virtually all the house prices gone down in value in that area in the past 10 years? (since the houses were first released) Anyone can shed some light please? Many thanks !

Hi,
Old thread, sorry!
I have just rented a property in Bishops park area in Bishops Stortford. Hoping to get my son into Hillmead primary.
A little bird just told it will be almost impossible to get into Bishops Stortford high school because of my home address.
Can anybody verify this pls?

Old thread I know but considering move to BS at the moment & wondering if things have changed at all since op?

Since the thread started there is a HUGE new development starting to be built on the north side of town. Thousands of homes and new primary and secondary schools. The town and villages south are clogged with traffic every day, a new by-pass is being built round a village to the east and the main east/west road will be closed for the duration. M11 accidents are frequent causing no end of jams. Green belt land to the south of BS is earmarked for new houses, new primary and relocation of BS High School. Sawbridgeworth has 500 extra houses in the pipeline within the existing infrastructure. Disaster. I would reconsider. The whole area will be a building site for the foreseeable future!
