North Lanark where not to live/avoid

DD is moving to North Lanark after summer. Any advice on where to live and where to avoid. She will be working in Chryston.

If you have kids find out where the good schools are- doesnt have to be N Lanarkshire as boundaries for other councils are close. I would start at secondary level and work backwards. Nowhere springs to mind initially as i dont know the area that well.

Sorry just seen it is dd. Does she drive? Best area nearby is Bishopbriggs/ Lenzie. I would be happy for my dd to live in either. Easy compute by car to work but handy for Glasgow to evenings and weekends (regular and fast train service). Only a few miles from Glasgow center.

If no car then she needs to look at train routes to work. Would avoid immediate environs though!

If she is young she will want to be close to Glasgow.

Dont discount Glasgow itself. A Merchant City flat (with parking) would be ideal- it would be a 20min or so commute - all the traffic is heading into town am, coming home would be busy though. May be worth it though if she wants the city lifestyle.

She does drive and will be working in a school.

A lot depends on budget and needs/wants. Is it a permanent move? Is she going to buy or rent? Does she want house/garden or flat? I know this area v well but if you give me more specifics re above, can give better advice

Chryston itself is a nice place to live however if she is teaching in the local schools, she may not want to risk living next door to her students. Lenzie is 5 minutes drive but pricey. Bishopbriggs & Kirkintilloch close but less pricey. All decent places to live.

I have dc in both the primary & the high school & am impressed by both. Good luck to your dd in her new job.

Thefirst she is going to work at the high school? What ages are your children at the high school and what are the children like, behaviour wise. She is looking forward to the new school. I don't think she will buy as she has a flat to sell in Guildford. I think she can only afford about £400 all in, looking at the prices it looks like a struggle.

There are a few places nearby with newer estates that might be worth a look if she does decide to buy. You have gartcosh which isn't far and a bus goes very close to Muirhead which is right beside chryston.. You then have moodiesburn, not bad area. Heading into Glasgow you have stepps and cardowan, both on a bus route that goes to muirhead which again is right beside chryston. Lenzie, as has been mentioned, is very close by as well. There are a number if areas where she could manage to get a smallish flat for £400 per mth. I would avoid muirhead though. If I had a preference I'd go for Stepps. Nice wee main st, lots of older houses, just generally a nice place to live. Expensive mostly but there are a few cheaper options

One in first year, one in second year. Behaviour wise the children are great. I am sure some are more challenging than others but the school deals with them well. There is a great vibe in school and on the whole, the children are proud to belong. Certainly in the community the children are courteous and polite (and very very smart owing to a strict uniform policy).

Your dd will be happy there i am sure. I think the school and staff are great.

Rent wise, Kirkintilloch might be worth a look. 10-15 minutes in the car. Bishopbriggs also. There will most certainly be something to suit the budget.

Having a look at the areas mentioned, most have flats to rent around £500-£595, below that you are looking at the not so nice bits of the areas. Kirkintilloch had a few under £500 but as I don't know that area well I couldn't say if they were ok areas or not. If she went with stepps/cardowan and didn't have the expense of a car, the bus service would be fine to get her to work.

Some helpfull advice thanks, she will need to look into some of these areas. Thefirst she is coming down on Thursday to see the new school. She has read the information on the school website and she is very excited about some of the stuff they do. She does have a car and will only be staying Sunday to Friday and then home for the weekend. The problem with the price of flats is that you then have council tax on top and then bills. I think she might need to go for a flat share.

If I had a spare room deste, she could have stayed here and helped sort out my current childcare ishoos . Hope she finds something suitable. She could certainly find some flat share options in the Dennistoun area of Glasgow, which isn't too far away from her work area, and has an abundance of flats for rent/flat shares. It's literally 10 mins away by car, and a bus also goes through Muirhead (in case she is without a car for any reason). The new M80 road would open up more options for your DD as well, so she might well find something maybe a bit further out, heading away from Glasgow, which again would mean only a 10-15 minute drive. There is Cumbernauld as well, a bit further out but you'll get some cheaper rents out that way.

this one is in a nice-ish part of Condorrat in Cumbernauld, and if you click on the map bit, you'll see the M80 in the frame. 1 bedroom, only £365 p/m.

Will see meet head of her dept on Thursday? If so, it might be worth saying to them that she is looking for a flat share. There are a number of young teachers who may be in the position to rent out a room or flat share.

Local letting and estate agents are Callan & Co, Village Estates and there is a legal practice in the village who deal in rentals.

Local paper is Kirkintilloch Herald - lets are in there also. I can post the paper too you each week if you like.

In Glasgow itself there are serviced appartments which look very swish but doubtlessly come with a tarrif to match but the websites say they will give you a discount on long stays. Maybe something to consider for a month or so until she gets settled in, meets the staff & has the chance to check out the locale?

I will keep my eyes and ears open for anything which might suit & let you know.

Thanks banana I shall let her see that one. We will also look into Dennistoun, it's difficult if you don't know the area although she lived in Glasgow about 8 years ago.

Dennistoun is what they call up and coming. 100 years ago it was allposh new tenements and a (still really great) Alexandra Park. The buildings are smashing and remain, but there have been - inevitably - lots of social ups and downs to the area. If your DD does not mind a certain city-centre grittiness, then it would be a good place to live while young, and in recent years has been 'rediscovered' by Glasgow trendies. The tenement flats can be really great and very cheap. There are all sorts of good shops and cafes, from African greengrocers to Polish bakeries to old-established Italian delis and restaurants (among the best in Scotland: www.celinos.com/celinos.html ) It's close enough to the city centre and to the Royal Infirmary and to Strathclyde University (all brisk walking distance) for developers to be moving in.

But 'naice' it isn't. At least, not until the gentrifiers finally take it over. My DH comes from nearby and I have encountered nothing but pleasantness - OK plus a Glasgow gallusness - from everyone whom I've met there. Just remember though, even though this is not a Glasgow saying: 'a cat may look at aking.'
