De-mossing on roof. Anyone had it done? Is it worth it?

We've had 2 quotes this week for some work we need done on some ridge tiles and a valley on our roof (our bedroom is a bay window and water is coming in at the valley).
One of the quotes has come out about £100 more but has included de-mossing the whole roof and treating it with a chemical to stop the moss coming back.
If we went with this guy but didn't get the de-mossing done it'd be about £100 less than the other quote.

Has anyone had de-mossing done and know how much you paid for it and was it worth it? As far as I can see there's a reasonable amount of moss there but nowhere near as much as on our neighbours roof which is almost completely green!

We had demossing, coating and replacing old tiles and clearing hurrahing for 1500 I would Defo get it done

My neighbour had it done, he is fanatical about sweeping his roof. houseproud!
The moss has never come back in the 4yrs since it was done. They also had the roof painted red at the same time. What an eyesore! it sticks out like a sore thumb.
All in the road wish it was still covered in moss!

My neighbour had it done. It cost them about £700 I think. They made a terrible mess all over our house and garden and that of the neighbours on the other side, so warn your neighbours if you do decide to get it done. I think it was a pressure washer thing that they knocked all the moss off with.

Their roof is now bright red but they're happy with it (they have a meerkat garden ornament, nuff said), and the roof is free from moss although they only had it done a couple of months ago.

Thanks, sounds like our total cost of around £900 is good then.

As someone else said, this will make a hell of a mess. Ask them if they'll de-moss your garden afterwards.

In my experience with tradesmen, I've found that they generally don't like cleaning up. In one case I had to hire a skip to get rid of all the rubbish left behind from job.

If you ask the question before they've got the job, you might stand a better chance of getting them to clean up.

I attended a seminar by SPAB (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) about 3 years ago, and IIRC, they said that research now suggested there was no benefit to having your roof de-mossed, contrary to previous thinking. They said don't bother, save your cash for something that will be useful.

Hi, my neighbour just had his roof tiles jet washed and his roof painted pillar box red 😟. I haven’t confronted him about it yet, and I’m not sure what to do. It’s ugly and no one else’s roof is this colour around here. Any suggestions?

Don't have it jetwashed off as that can damage the roof and makes a mess. If you have it removed by hand (which any decent firm would suggest) then it's better and cleaner.

If you hate the moss, run some copper wire along the ridge on both sides, each time it rains the copper will slowly get rid of the moss. Then it prevents it coming back. One house near us did the whole power wash and moss removal. It made his roof leak in spots when then needed repairing and the moss is coming back.

My husband actually does de-mossing as one of the services they offer, it does have benefits and a good tradie should be cleaning it all up afterwards. I know his is bagged up and disposed off appropriately (and I find chunks off of his clothes everywhere...)

Should also say its worth asking about the method, my husband and his team do it all by hand, some companies jet wash which can damage some roofs and cause leaks as per pp

What do you imagine you could do about it? He could paint his entire house purple and you couldn't do anything about it. His house, his choice.

I'm not sure what the benefits of getting rid of the moss are supposed to be. I'm leaving mine put; it's extra insulation!

We demossed ours during a heatwave last year. Just brushed it down, and cleaned up after. Hasn't come back yet, but I've noted the copper tape idea for reference.

We had the moss removed from our roof by hand, not jet washed the main reason was condensation in the loft which has now stopped.
