Advice wanted please: do you have any woodland OR do you have a steep drop OR do you live on a flight path in your garden

sorry - there are 3 topics in this thread I thought would be better than taking up 3 threads.

we saw a house yesterday we have made an offer on. It has a patch of attractive woodland adjoining the garden which would belong to us - does anyone have any woodland or any experience of looking after woodland (we have a tiny garden in terraced house in city) what would we need to do - just leave it to grow or does it require any maintenance?

also

the house has steps up from the back to a a terrace/patio at the back with tables, chairs etc and a pretty flimsy ornamental wooden rail along, its quite a high drop (over 6 feet) and we have young children - does anyone else have a high drop and if so what have you done to make it safe but still attractive

also

the house is on a flight path as is near the airport - there is quite a lot of plane activity - anyone else live with this? do you get used to it or does it drive you mad?

Yes a woodland needs some work done to it - no idea what or when though.

How about a nice chrome and glass fence to stop your DC falling over the edge.

Used to live on Heathrow flight path - you get used to it.

You can contract the work on the woodland out in exchange for the wood

But it would be worth having a wood burner & using it yourself; just getting someone in for advise/heavy work

we have woodland as part of our grounds. our dc play in it so dh always makes sure its boundary is secure and also checks once a year for dangerous branches. if you are not going to use it for anything theres not really much else to do, unless it needs drainage work,but unlikely you will need to do this.

sorry just read you do have young dc, when they get older the woodland will be a fanatstic place for them to play, ours have the most fun it there.

Our back garden is on a steep slope, which was made into stages. The results is a patio and then quite a high brick wall with flower beds, so far we have just been out there with them and been able to supervise. We've only been here a few months so havent got any firm plans for any barriers. TBH by the time we get enough money for something like that the kids will be old enough to not worry!

Live near/under flight path - you definitely get used to it. However, the volcanic ash cloud dispruption was lovely.

Have woodland behind but it's not ours - how lovely would that be

my parents house had a large area of woodland at the bottom of the garden, as far as i know they never did a thing to it in 15 years - the dog loved it, but nobody else really ever ventured in there

We have woodland which we sometimes check to see if trees have fallen over or are too crowded and which keeps us in firewood plus two very steep slopes which are fenced off plus an electric fence but our youngest knows never to go there without us.

Not a flight path exactly but the RAF seem to use our house as a turning point (or bombing target or something). We wave to the very low flyers.

Used to live on the Concorde flight path back in the day. Never quite got used to that (it was SO exciting!) but you get used to everything else.

We have 23 acres of woodland, with a steep drop from over the terrace down. It's partially covered in bamboo which NEVER EVER goes away no matter what means you go to...hiring plant machinery, fire and manual digging.

We had a stone mason replace the stone balcony so the kiddies can't fall over it. Be careful of badgers lurking in the woodland as they are protected and you'll be buggered to do anything.
