We are hoping to move in 9 weeks-ish and I need a reliable, efficient removals service....

We are only moving to the next village - its 5 miles away - and pickfords is coming out at £800 plus VAT.

That seems a lot to me......thoughts???

wow, thanks for the feedback.

Think I will go with pickfords.

I have 2 young dc and a - very - stressed hubby so the packing service sounds great tbh....if dh sorts his precious loft and shed out he should be ok Smile

Packing is wonderful! They do in 1 day what it would take you weeks. (But they did pack my note to the new owners and bunch of flowers for them last time.)

CoonRapids · 28/05/2011 20:23

Good luck. We're moving this week and thanks to advice on mumsnet have opted for the packing service. Since we exchanged we've focused on de-cluttering, but the house (with 3 children under 7) can function normally(ish) until the day before the packers arrive. The packing service only costs around 250 more so well worth it. And don't forget to get a range of quotes and then negotiate down the price of the one you want to go for. Ours are going to disassemble and reassemble bed, cot and bunks. That alone would have taken dh and I many hours.

Becaroooo · 29/05/2011 08:29

Good luck rapids

Need to sell dh on the packing idea!!!!! Smile

Another tip - if you can possibly avoid it, DON'T move on a Friday (or Saturday or Sunday for that matter). It's really popular and much more expensive. Not only that, but if something goes wrong on completion (it's rare, but it's happened to us TWICE now!) then all the solicitors go home Friday evening and you can contact NO-ONE until the Monday. It's really really frustrating and stressful.

If you plan to move on a Wednesday, then you've got some wriggle room and your removal costs will be cheaper.

CoonRapids · 29/05/2011 20:52

Thanks Becaroooo. Actually I'm the one that's anal and controlling and as I'll be (reluctantly) at work during the pack I've labelled everything I don't want packed with masking tape Grin. Thanks for the tips Bran. We're in a busy road by station with permit parking so we've got to try and line up ours and my parent's car in position to save places for the removal van. That in itself is going to stress me out.

Becaroooo · 30/05/2011 08:31

bran Grin Great tips, thanks!

rubberduck I know what you mean but we have to move on a friday as my dh is rapidly running out of hols and he only works friday morning anyway so he would only need a morning off and my dc stay over at my PIL on a friday night so its got to be a friday really. I take your point re: solicitors etc - my EA is open on a sat...will find out if the solicitors is!!!!!

Thanks again all for all the top tips x

Becarooo, I can recommend David Metcalf in West Bridgford. They also offer a packing service.

Becaroooo · 30/05/2011 21:17

If it's not too late and you haven't already signed up with someone I'll say as well how great Pickfords are. We've used them three times now and the packing service is fab too. It's not that much extra, particularly when you consider the boxes etc. that they provide.

We last moved in January and got them to halve their quote, just by asking. They're one of the few firms that has salaried staff and their own fleet of lorries. Therefore, if a crew isn't working they're still being paid, so sending them out to work really only costs them petrol. We too were only moving a v. short distance and we're not far from the depot so we made a cheeky offer and they accepted, just like that. Take advantage of the quiet housing market!

WindUpBird · 03/06/2011 07:57

We used a local firm last year to move about a mile down the road. It cost just under £400 to move a 3-bed house-worth of stuff on a Friday, it would have been an extra £300 or so to pack, I think. £800 seems a lot for just removals!

CatherineAlford1 · 17/10/2012 12:46

Getting quotations from removals companies is not a bad idea coz most of the companies are offering free quote Offer available online.

We had a few quotes and pickfords were most expensive by a significant amount and said they'd need twice as long (two days as some of our stuff was going into their temp storage, other into our temp accommodations.) We used bishops, who moved us in half a day.

We used Pickfords when we moved from a island to the mainland.

We'd left before they arrived, they packed everything into the van, and delivered it to our new house before we got there! Never even saw them. Every thing was wrapped well etc.

jonn3 · 10/07/2014 21:18

this is how pickfords removals operate

i asked for a quote, i'm single and moving to a 1 bed flat 2 miles away, i said all my stuff is packed stacked and ready to go with easy access at both ends, total move time i estimate 1 and half hours max. i got quoted £800

so lets look at this - thats £400 a mile, i could buy a van and insure and pay 2 people £50ph and still have change. pickfords? pick-pockets more discriptive.

then i questioned this thieving amount and they tried to convince me that it was a bargain.
they then said its peak season. i'm sorry but i didn't know we had seasonal removals, they are talking like i'm booking a holiday. then there is VAT, which i am very aware of and it can't be used as an excuse. then you pay their insurance??? i mean how useless are they and how much damage do they do if they force you to pay insurance, if you have builders erect a scaffold around your house you don't pay their insurance for them, THEY DO.

but the real sadness is what if its an old lady who doesn't know better, or some-one with mental issues and they can't deal with people properly and agrees to this.

PICKFORDS - NO MORALS - NO ETHICS - SHAMEFULL

I can also recommend Bishops Move - they have been brilliant for us. Cheerful, efficient and professional.

Woozlebear · 05/09/2014 17:55

If you're anywhere in Surrey / South London do NOT on ANY account use Luxfords. Awful company. Pyscho foreman in charge of our job - surly weird and agressive from the get go. Refused to pack our stuff in the way that had been agreed and paid for, refused to dismantle and reassemble furniture as agreed and paid for, broke some furniture, and damaged several other items, refused to put floor protectors down and trampled filth all through our house. It was utterly horrendous. Tried to leave a half dismantled bed outside our new house at the end of the job (5 minutes before the heavens opened) saying it wouldn't fit and they weren't going to fully dismantle it to get it in because they hadn't had to fully dismantle it to get it out. - we'd paid for full disassembly and reassembly! Truly awful.

We eventually got a grudging cheque for about 100 quid which nowhere near covered the damage. I've moved myself before (rental van, 5 days of exhaustion and hell and endless trips back and forth). I'd rather do that again then deal with those idiots.
