Please come and tell me how rubbish induction hobs are

DP wants to install one but I just don't get them.

OK yes they are safer than a gas range and yes I guess more sleek. But I actually do like the look of a range cooker (and most certainly prefer the cooking on a gas cooker)

I guess cost is a factor but some of the cost of replacing cookware and installing extra cupboards necessary for a job may offset some of that

Please come and tell me how rubbish inductions are so I can convince DP

Also, I'm going to suggest we go to Ikea on Sunday - it's been far too long since we last went!

Sleepwhenidie · 11/03/2011 23:00

Ikea on a Sunday? You must be some kind of masochist! Try and go at 8pm on a weeknight, it will be dead! We have a planner from Lago kitchens coming on Friday. Their kitchens look really cool, Italian design, but I have no idea how good the quality is. All the fronts are glass-is that an insane idea with 3 small DC's? I realise I would ave to go for matt rather than polished, otherwise I will spend my life cleaning handprints Hmm

maryjane71 · 13/03/2011 01:08

Well the meatballs help with the stress! If you don't mind me asking Sleep can you give me an idea of what you are quoted and what for please from Lago?

We've decided 15K is far too expensive. The granite splashback is cheaper than a glass one (£1500 Shock).

So we're going to try kuchenhaus (sp?) the german company. We went to one of their showrooms last weekend and were quite impressed. Their glass splashbacks are only £200.

Oh, this is becoming a chore - it's supposed to be fun Confused

Sleepwhenidie · 13/03/2011 12:26

Hi, we haven't had a quote from Lago yet but an article about kitchen companies (feb elle decoration?) said they start at £7,500. When I went to the showroom the other day the guy was working on what he described as a "really big" kitchen and I glimpsed the total quote which was £29k. That would include all appliances, worktops and fitting.

We had a meeting with our architect yesterday and have found a place to move our boiler out of the kitchen, which I am very pleased about! Frees up space for ovens and gives us 600mm more worktop if we want it. DH has also agreed to induction hob on the island (with downdraft extractor) and domino gas hob on wall side worktop-I am v pleased Grin.

Haven't heard of kuchenhaus...will look too!

Check whether your splash back is toughened glass - it should be able to withstand high temperatures. Just got an induction hob and love it hav'nt noticed higher bills yet as not had a bill since installation

somersetmum · 13/03/2011 21:58

Don't get a Naff Neff induction hob - my mum has one; it is now about three years old and the childlock keeps switching itself on and you can't switch it off again easily. Having googled, it appears to be a common problem with Neff.

We have a Smeg and we love, love, love it.

wheredidyoulastseeit · 13/03/2011 22:04

John Lewis do glass splashbacks

maryjane71 · 13/03/2011 22:21

I think we'll also look into John Lewis - thanks. We were advised to get Neff everything, made us think the kitchen co. had some deal with them but no savings on our part! Really pushed it.

We went to a party last night and someone said to tell her what appliances we were after because she can get them cheaper for us through her job. Bosch are supposed to be reliable.

Grin at Naff

Hoping to join in on the quest for the perfect kitchen.... decisions so far, made without moments hesitation:

  1. Shaker style cream painted units
  2. Gas range (ruling out induction as dont want to have to get all new set of saucepans)
  3. Stainless steel/glass extractor fan
  4. Glass splashback behind oven (as apparently easy to clean)

But completely stumped about worktop! Have laminate at minute which I have absolutely no issue with, but DH hates ! Had thought of going for Corian or cheaper alternative as love the seamless look and built in sinks and splashback. But then researching it more it seems to have its drawbacks too, which is worrying as it is so expensive. Really struggling as granite I find too cold, wood looks lovely but seems to be a problem round the sinks..... help! Never thought that this would be the hard part in choosing new kitchen!

maryjane71 · 13/03/2011 23:34

Welcome TuTu Smile Granite is cheaper than Corian, £1000 cheaper in our case. We discovered glass worktops last weekend and were very taken with them, they look lovely. Textured so don't show fingerprints.

Just had an email from the kitchen place and they are offering us a free set of induction pans.

There is a cheaper alternative to Corian TuTu, it's called Maya (sp?) and imo looks better. I'll look it up and let you know

innertiger · 16/03/2011 14:33

we have a beautiful glass splashback bought from our local glass shop - made to measure and fitted for about £300. 160 (h) x 100(w).

Worktop - have a pure white Compaq which is 96% ston, 4% polymer. Is easy to clean, really tough (apart from dropping knives point downwards!!) and still looks great 3 years on. And fine around the sink. I use a little Viakal occassionally for water marks.

have an AEG induction hob - i have never waxed so lyrical about a white appliance - it is fab!!! Water boils so quickly and it is brilliant to clean with HobBrite...just don't scratch it! Again, 3 years on and it still looks like new.

And its topped by an ELica disco ball extractor - beautiful but not very useful. We have a second fan extractor hidden in the ceiling for the real work.

TuTu · 18/03/2011 23:34

Having researched worktops till sick of even writing the word, we are now going to go with granite, and just have to resign myself to alot of polishing (or get good at turning blind eye).
Next focus is on trying to get the kitchen layout sorted. We have a dresser that at the minute just acts as a magnet for junk, so trying to come up with something more functional but not boring looking either!

Driftwood999 · 19/03/2011 12:58

Granite does not need polishing! Washing down with hot soapy water and perhaps a squirt of flash maintains ours. We chose it because of it's hardwearing properties, it's also a natural product and imho looks all the better for a few irregularities in the stone. It's non uniformity is attractive.
