Please come and tell me how rubbish induction hobs are

DP wants to install one but I just don't get them.

OK yes they are safer than a gas range and yes I guess more sleek. But I actually do like the look of a range cooker (and most certainly prefer the cooking on a gas cooker)

I guess cost is a factor but some of the cost of replacing cookware and installing extra cupboards necessary for a job may offset some of that

Please come and tell me how rubbish inductions are so I can convince DP

Jet! You can't have an on trend hot water tap with a gas hob!

JetSetWilly · 08/03/2011 21:46

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Been caught out!!! That had made me chuckle

Sigh so another plus for the induction then yes?

It's the future Grin

OrangeBernard · 08/03/2011 21:48

You'll probably have to replace your pans cause the induction magic only works with certain types.

maryjane71 · 08/03/2011 21:50

The next topic shall be glass splashbacks Smile

OrangeBernard · 08/03/2011 21:50

They DO work with stainless steel.magnets, innit.

maryjane71 · 08/03/2011 21:52

Oh the new set of pans are included in my budget Orange. Who doesn't want a new set of pans? Colour coordinated of course

maryjane71 · 08/03/2011 21:53

Are Ikea ss pans okay? I have a collection of 2

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/03/2011 21:54

Theres a whole defra document on cooking appliance efficiencies!

olivertulliver · 08/03/2011 21:54

We have no gas in our village, so have induction hob.

I like it and easy to keep pristine.

My mil, however, just dropped a jar of marmite on hers and it smashed. (Hob, not marmite)

JetSetWilly · 08/03/2011 22:00

I should be ok then as I have stainless steel and Le crueset

Aha Maryjane very nearly. Yes indeed we have touched on splashbacks, glass was mentioned, yes, but the wall is pitched on one side and quite high so we're thinking of tiling the entire wall (with glass tiles) hmm already gone off that idea actually sounds a nightmare to clean what with all the oil and cooking vapours

Anyway next thread-in-waiting is downdraft extractors (the extractors that pop up from the work surface as opposed to a hood) I say no DP days yes [Grin]

OP posts:
maryjane71 · 08/03/2011 22:14

Don't have tiles of any description Jet, or do you like cleaning grout? If your DP wants a pop up extractor indulge him! Learn to live with it Wink poor you Envy

maryjane71 · 08/03/2011 22:15

oli, what a fabulous excuse! Your MIL is just clumsy Smile

olivertulliver · 08/03/2011 22:21

OOh, I am a building control officer and I'm seeing a LOT of down draft extractors in new kitchens.

I want one!

northender · 08/03/2011 22:26

Never thought I would prefer the induction hob to gas but I really do! Of all the things in my lurvely kitchen I would not swap the hob for anything. You have to get one.

maryjane71 · 08/03/2011 22:26

How much are they Oli? I don't think I have room, in showrooms they all seem to be on islands. Oh to have the room for an island Sad

JetSetWilly · 08/03/2011 22:29

Blimey must ensure DP never ever sees this thread all saying go for the induction and downdraft excluder!

You're right Maryjane the tiles are quite a ridiculous idea. Hhmmm need to work that one out as it's a tall wall (pitched on one side) and we've decided not to have wall cupboards

JetSetWilly · 08/03/2011 22:31

Magnet used to sell them MJ but don't anymore apparently. I've seen some aeg ones tonight for £1k ( and I think you would need two Shock) I've also seen a german make for about £1.3k not cheap!

OP posts:
maryjane71 · 08/03/2011 22:31

What do you mean by pitched Jet? I will think of something!

JetSetWilly · 08/03/2011 22:34

Slanted/sloped on one side (right side when looking at cooker) as the kitchen is an extension. We have a velux above the cooker

JetSetWilly · 08/03/2011 22:35

Would love your help on this btw if you're happy too

OP posts:
maryjane71 · 08/03/2011 22:40

Hmmm I'm stumped! Depends what colour you're after

maryjane71 · 08/03/2011 22:41

Go on Smile

maryjane71 · 08/03/2011 22:48

I need to go to bed Jet and all else. Would love to discuss more tomorrow. We haven't covered sinks, taps or flooring yet!
