Please come and tell me how rubbish induction hobs are

DP wants to install one but I just don't get them.

OK yes they are safer than a gas range and yes I guess more sleek. But I actually do like the look of a range cooker (and most certainly prefer the cooking on a gas cooker)

I guess cost is a factor but some of the cost of replacing cookware and installing extra cupboards necessary for a job may offset some of that

Please come and tell me how rubbish inductions are so I can convince DP

hi everyone, I am keen to join in the kitchen debates too! Can any of you explain how downdraft extractors work? I am now considering the brilliant suggestion of induction hob (on island) and gas (on wallside worktop) dominoes for our new kitchen, but wouldn't want two overhead extractors. Where does the extracted air go with a downdraft one? How much space needs to be left for the extractor underneath the unit?

maryjane71 · 09/03/2011 20:14

Hello there Sleep! I'm no expert on downdraft extractors but assume the air re-circulates. Your kitchen sounds lovely and posh Smile Hopefully someone with some useful advise can help you out

Sleepwhenidie · 09/03/2011 20:24

Not posh yet, builders hopefully starting on entire house soon Grin. Also bracing myself for the stress of moving to a rented place for a few months with 3dc's, should be worth it though!

maryjane71 · 09/03/2011 20:27

Oh it will be worth it! What's your kitchen colour scheme?

Sleepwhenidie · 09/03/2011 20:35

We haven't decided 100%, we were going for white gloss (want sleek, handleless, contemporary look) but now am thinking of pale coffee, possibly combined with slightly greyish white or darker grey...the room is very light, with glazed roof and glass doors out to garden at the end. What about you?

maryjane71 · 09/03/2011 20:48

Cream and black. Cream gloss doors and drawer fronts and black worktop and splashbacks. And brushed steel tap/insinkerator/sink. It's a compromise. Ideally I would have coffee and cream but DH thinks our house is beige enough already! Ours is north facing so we're having loads of spotlights everywhere

JetSetWilly · 09/03/2011 20:51

Hi Maryjane sorry about that I fell asleep! And welcome sleep join in there's lots to talk aboutand get decided

I don't know how the downdraft extractors work but I would guess the same as Maryjane and recirculate the air. Theyre popular in America apparently. Magnet used to sell AEG ones but don't anymore (don't know why). They don't seem to sell them on AEG website either

The only downdraft extractors I've found so far are die d..... (sorry on phone a real ballache to search right now but if you google the brand will come up). They cost approx £1,200 and sit the entire length of the hob. The AEG ones I saw in magnet sat either side of the hob and were £600 each. There are videos on YouTube showing how effective the units are have a look

Your kitchen sounds lovely where are you buying your units from they sound exactly like what we have in mind

And at what stage are you up to Maryjane?

I apologise for any typos now I'm on my phone

Hopefully jet will be on soon, she said the next discussion would be about downdraft extractors. I've not considered them at all until now but mmmmmm

maryjane71 · 09/03/2011 20:53

As if by magic.........Grin Hello

JetSetWilly · 09/03/2011 21:00

Ha ha how funny i didn't even click on Active I clicked on threads I'm on. Hmmm not sure about effectiveness I think they need to be installed close to the job and will obviously work best on pots that are closer to the unit (look at vids on YouTube). I'm going ideal home exhibition next week and am hoping to view some.

Where are you both getting your units from?

maryjane71 · 09/03/2011 21:00

What stage? Still the planning one! The quote is 17k so I'm trying to knock off at least 2k. Hence the glass splashback instead of granite. Should save us 1500 of it for starters! And rhino lino instead of karndean. Can't remember what I've said on each thread, I'm on a few now so sorry if I am repeating myself/boring you Grin

maryjane71 · 09/03/2011 21:05

The company we're using came highly recommended from the bloke who did a splendid job of our fitted bedroom. We had just one other quote from a company recommended by DH's friend but their cream gloss fronts were decidedly buttermilk. They gave us a slightly better layout though which we will pass off as our own with the place we are using Grin

maryjane71 · 09/03/2011 21:10

did you get a free ticket with the house mag jet? I did but binned it! I'd love to go

maryjane71 · 09/03/2011 21:12

Just realised the money we will save on the splaskback might be spent on a fancy extractor

JetSetWilly · 09/03/2011 21:41

Well that is a decent size budget! We are looking at more £8k with a contingency. However all electrics and flooring are in place. Not to mention DP is a builder which brings the cost down again.

I think glass is nicer than granite anyway and certainly easier to keep clean and maintain. (DP brought home a glass sample today funnily enough).

DP got the tickets for ideal home through a friend somehow. I would normally go to this sort of thing but it would be good to sound out 1. The hot water tap (lol) 2. Induction hob 3. Downdraft extractor and of course any other gadgets and frippery they have to offer. Can't believe you binned your ticket what were you thinking!

Nowt wrong with saving the money on the granite and going for the downdraft extractor. It's just reallocating funds Grin. We're having solid oak worktop (against my better judgement?) with possibly slate/sage/cream/White cupboards. I think we're going for gloss but wonder if they've had their day?? I love handleless if poss. DP is going to magnet tomorrow. The other contender is Howarth. Think we will also get a price from ikea too just to compare but doubt we will go for their kitchen as the sizes are all different and units arent made up

Happy to receive any suggestions and advice!

My original budget was 10k, 12 as an absolute max. But we need everything including a new half a ceiling - don't even ask! DH wanted black and white. There's a really pricey kitchen shop in a poncey place which has a cream and black combo in the window. We drive past often. I just thought wow! Just thought the cream would be less stark than white. Gloss fronts were the height of classyness when I had to settle for B&Q's cheapest 13 years ago.
I've been told to go to Ikea! Supposed to be much cheaper. Funny thing is I yearned for an Ikea kitchen for ages

maryjane71 · 09/03/2011 22:16

Lucky you for having a DH who is a builder! I'm Envy !!! Ikea are supposed to be better now. Offering a fitting service for example. You are the perfect person to advise us on the latest gizmos Smile

maryjane71 · 09/03/2011 22:22

Was trying to come up with an idea for your pitched wall. Could you perhaps have 2 pieces of glass with a seamless join?

Sleepwhenidie · 10/03/2011 10:29

Don't know where kitchen is coming from yet - as I said, dream would be Roundhouse but £50-£60k is out of the question so I need to downgrade my ambitions! We are still waiting for a firm quote on the building work we are having done and this has to come out of the total budget available. What is left over then needs to be allocated between finishes...flooring, kitchen and bathrooms! I have had a quote from a mid-range place for about £30k including appliances but am now also contemplating going for Wickes or similar and just having expensive worktops and taps etc to save money....

maryjane71 · 10/03/2011 20:59

Wickes do look very 'upmarket' now, my neighbour just had one fitted. I think I just want one company to do the lot because DH isn't the best at DIY and the little finishing touches would go untouched! Still think I'll have another look at Ikea. Your kitchen sounds rather large Sleep, what's the layout like?

Sleepwhenidie · 10/03/2011 22:28

I understand what you mean about the finish - something to think about. My DH not strong on DIY front either (understatement emoticon!) Part of our problem is that we are likely to be selling the property in next 5 years - if we felt that it was a proper long term place we would splash out and have what we really want but we need to be sensible in terms of spend, whilst making sure that whatever we put in we like and will still look good in a few years.

We will have a very open plan layout, if you imagine an L shape rotated clockwise to upside down, there is a living area at the bottom, open to a big dining area and then the kitchen in the corner of the L, 6m long by 4m wide and another living area (the plan is for this day room to be more DC focused to keep the other living area more grown up) down 4 stairs off the left side of the kitchen, so forming the short bit of the L.

The main run of kitchen will be on right hand side wall and then the island will be 2.8m long - left hand side will be partly open to the dayroom. Was planning on having hob and sinks on wall side but now contemplating hob on island. End of kitchen will be glass doors and also the day room will have folding glass doors out to a terrace and the garden.

What about yours?

maryjane71 · 10/03/2011 22:44

Not half as impressive as yours Smile Along the long wall integrated oven and microwave in a column on the right, with a fridge/freezer in a column on the left. Central induction hob. On the L shape on the opposite side, the sink under the window, dishwasher and washing machine. Oh and the upper cupboards are going to go up to the ceiling. Might explain the high quote, but saves me from having to place magazine pages on top of the cupboards to catch grease and dust!

Elibean · 11/03/2011 18:43

I was anti, but now we have one...I love it, sorry Grin

Clean, nice to look at, safe, take less space. We were able to keep some of our cookware (stainless steel) so not a huge cost there either.

Go on, go for it!

JetSetWilly · 11/03/2011 21:19

Hi sleep and Maryjane great the thread is still going just wanted to say I'm still here! Wasn't able to post last night-went to ikea! And v tired tonight. Will post when I'm on the pc and not squinting at the phone. Been great reading your posts and imagining your kitchens.

Our layout is pretty much the same as yours sleep with the upside down L!

Anyway let's keep chatting good to hear some ideas and get support

And thanks for your post elibean (well kinda Grin)

I'm still here Smile We are going to see the planner tomorrow morning.

Going to ask how much we will save by having a glass splashback instead of granite. And how much more the gorgeous round black extractor will cost compared to the current hidden under the cupboard one we've chosen. It's by elica and costs around £1300 Shock We looked at one last weekend.

We also saw textured glass worktops and think they look fabulous. So wondering if the planner could order them if they don't supply them themselves. LaVico by Lechner. So sorry, can't do links!

I think that's it. Trying to get the price down to 15k from 17k.

A work colleague has just had a wine cooler fitted in her kitchen. And she loves it. Planner did suggest having one on the first visit but I dismissed the idea. Now I'm not so sure, I love wine Grin
