need advice on painting family room in new house

Am moving into new house. The family room needs repainting asap as is currently very dodgy colour. The carpet is pink and it is a quite dark room, so need something light, but have an off-white sofa so not something that will clash or make walls/sofa look dirty.

Any thoughts?

House is 1930s with lots of character details if that makes any difference

What shade of pink is the carpet?
And is it a plain carpet or patterned?

cant go wrong with the classic magnolia! sometime you just need to live there for a while to see how it feels before spending loads of money on paint!

Its a plain carpet, sort of dusky pink.

I'm a bit worried that magnolia will look odd with the sofa. I was thinking of maybe a cafe au lait colour but am worried that the wrong shade will be ugly and too brown.

I can't live in a completely pink room! Besides, the majority of the house are male and they are not happy at having to watch the footy srrounded by pinkness.

I would either try to match the sofa colour or go for a pale neutral. Matching off-whites/creams can be tricky & if you want to go for a different off-white you often have to go a but darker or it looks like you tried to match & got it wrong. So I would either go for pure white or a pale grey.

Or maybe go to Ikea first to get a large cheap rug to hide the carpet & then paint the walls to match that?
