We bought The Sun yesterday. I know, I know, but it was only to get the horses for the National, but I thought this was interesting reading:

Captain Crunch's Basket League

A basket of goods containing sliced bread, 2pts milk, 250g butter, 500g cheddar, 10 medium/large eggs, 750g cornflakes, 1l orange juice, large tin baked beans, 500g minced beef and 500g grapes. this is how they superkarkets compared.

Morrisons £8.50
Asda £8.61
Sainsbury's £9.56
Tesco £9.58
Aldi £10.18
Waitrose £14.60.

Two interesting things for me there.

  1. that sainsbury's was cheaper than Tesco

  2. that Aldi was as expensive as it was

So, now I have justification for choosing Sainsbos over Tesco and avoiding Aldi altogether

Unfortunately DH insists we shop in Morrison's

I guess I'd want to know:

  • how nice is the cheddar?
  • how kindly were the chickens/cows treated to make the eggs/mince beef?
etc

as the prices vary wildly within a supermarket in terms of these - so it depends if they compared like for like. Me? I'm going to continue shopping at Waitrose!
