Damn - I wish I had seen this thread a few days ago. We are also going to Scotland and have done some research into scottish parks - Craig Tara got the worst reviews as did another whose name escapes me. In the end it was between Auchenlarie, Eyemouth and Sundrum Castle. We chose Auchenlarie in the end and got 4 nights in June. does anyone know what Auchenlarie is like? (please don't say its smelly and dirty!)

BexieID · 12/01/2009 13:49

No idea what Auchenlarie is like, but it's one of my choices.

MyTakenIdentity · 12/01/2009 13:56

i've been to Auchenlarie. It was OK. Gorgeous scenery, there is a nature reserve walk with a castle close by. We only used the pool on-site, it was clean, sauna OK. I think the living room bed was damp/near a leak though. HTH

Notalone · 12/01/2009 14:24

Ah thanks MyTkaneIdentity - some of the sites had pages of negative reviews and couldn't find anything on Auchenlarie which I took to be a good thing! What is in the immediate area (driving distance) for rainy days? How big is it?

Bexie - it is a Hoseasons site so may be better than some of the others hopefully. In the Hoseasons brochure it looks lovely so I am hoping it is in reality too! May see you there lol

MyTakenIdentity · 12/01/2009 15:20

hi again

here is the local tourism site. I don't remember having a rainy day (luckily) and I think we swam when it did. I would say it's a smallish site, the pool/complex bit we went in weren't massive.

MyTakenIdentity · 12/01/2009 15:22

this is my favourite of the sun parks we've been to, but it is across the water from Auchenlarie. Still within driving distance of Dumfries and Galloway though, and can drive to the Lakes in about an hour. We had chalets, with central heating and a bath (think we've been twice/three times)

Notalone · 12/01/2009 18:01

Thanks Mytakenidentity - I actually considered that one too but really wanted to see Scotland this time. It looks gorgeous though and definitely one to look at next time. Are the views to die for there too?

I have had a look on the D & G site and there is loads to do in good weather. Do you know if there is much a 7 year old would like in wet weather (maybe a large farm, bowling or something similar?)

MyTakenIdentity · 12/01/2009 18:10

I'm sorry notalone, I can't remember. Maybe if you email the tourist office they will have a pack of leaflets for local attractions.

The Solway one is right on the edge of the Solway Firth, so if you walk out of the park and cross the road you can look over the water to Auchenlaurie!!!

Have a great time, I am

TheOtherMaryPoppinsDiets · 12/01/2009 18:25

Craig Tara has a cracking split level pool but the beach is shit and it's full of chavs

Nairn is a good base for exploring Moray, the Malt Whisky Trail, Aviemore and Invernesshire, so I'd go for that. Nairn is a pretty little quiet town.

Notalone · 12/01/2009 19:28

Thanks Mytakenidentity - I will do that. And thanks for putting my mind at rest too

sweetkitty · 12/01/2009 19:30

Do not go to Sandylands

It's in my hometwon and wht anyone would holiday there is beyond me, the caravan park is next door to the abattoir, I kid you not!

amazonianadventure · 12/01/2009 21:23

lol at sweetkitty.Im not far from you!

I wouldnt recommend a holiday at craig tara either.TOMPD we have neds u here not chavs but same thing

nothing to do around sundrum either.

I was looking at tummel valley the other day and was thinking of going later in the year

wish I had collected the tockens now.

I would also love to go to grannies but its far too far!

sweetkitty · 12/01/2009 21:28

I don't live there anymore amazonian just remember all the people in the freezing cold, horrid water during Glasgow fair fortnight, I wouldn't go to Craig Tara either.

Go up North

amazonianadventure · 15/01/2009 14:08

lucky you sweet kitty you have managed to escape!!

BexieID · 08/02/2009 22:37
