Treads Shoes are offering Mumsnetters £10 off a pair of leather boys' school shoes (£35, were £45) with free delivery across the UK, and a 1-year indestructible guarantee.

Put them to the test here.

Mumsnet carries some affiliate marketing links, so if you buy something through our posts, we may get a small share of the sale (more details here).

Because obviously my girls only ever do dainty, delicate activities at school and don't ever go trampling through mud, kicking balls or throwing themselves through bushes like loons. Thank goodness mumsnet is here to ensure we don't forget the proper order of gender things...

woodlice got there first. My DD was just as hard on her shoes as DS. And because she grew at a different rate, they usually had to last longer than DSs.

Nice to see no stereotyping on MN

DioneTheDiabolist · 11/04/2018 12:16

The company don't yet do girls shoes. They're launching them next year.

womanhuman · 11/04/2018 12:16

What they said.

Fuckoffunicorn · 11/04/2018 12:54

How about some indestructible shoes for my daughter - or should she be doing something more ladylike?

EduCated · 11/04/2018 12:54

Dione Do the ones they make not work on girls’ feet?

Fuckoffunicorn · 11/04/2018 12:56

A quick look at the site says

We made the decision to launch with shoes aimed at boys, as our research shows that in general, boys tend to be more active and therefore get through shoes faster.

EduCated · 11/04/2018 13:00

Saw that. Still think it bollocks. Would taking off the ‘boys’ description really stop people from buying them?

EduCated · 11/04/2018 13:01

Also, I would imagine that many girls are in part less active because of the flimsy crap generally marketed towards them.

BuggertheTabloids · 11/04/2018 13:22

No width fittings though. Looks like I'm stuck with Clarks then as both mine are an E fit!

asuwere · 11/04/2018 13:34

Strange marketing: "BLACK LEATHER SCHOOL SHOES
AVAILABLE ONLINE FOR BOYS AGED 6-16"
Why use age range rather than sizes for shoes?! DS2 was 8yr before he was a size 13.
I'd be tempted to trial the indestructibility but might break the t&cs by putting girl's feet in them!

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 11/04/2018 13:35

Guarantee is void if the shoe has in our reasonable opinion been abused or mishandled e.g. excessive water saturation beyond what is reasonably expected of schoolwear, damage through sharp objects, excessive dragging or use as brakes on bikes, skateboards or scooters.

Leaving aside the obvious sexism, I have to say love their guarantee. So the shoes cannot get too wet (well that's helpful given all it's done all year so far is rain) and should your child use them as brakes on a scooter or skateboard as they so often do at this age then the guarantee is void also. Hmm

frownylady · 11/04/2018 13:39

Apparently the 'dual fit system' means you convert the shoe to the wider fitting yourself by taking out the red insert.

My 14 year old is a size 10 however - they offer a 9.5-10 size then a 10.5 to 11 size. I'm loathe to by the first as surely he'll be at the outer range of the size but I don't need a whole size bigger either. Confusing system!

wrapsuperstar · 11/04/2018 14:08

Oh my lord @fuckoffunicorn that quote you shared is abysmal! Mother of two active, adventurous daughters here and I will not touch this company with a bargepole.

KatherinaMinola · 11/04/2018 15:04

Let shoes be shoes? It's like the pink pamper period box all over again. Why is MNHQ pandering to this shit? oh yeah, money-

KatherinaMinola · 11/04/2018 15:05

I think this thread should be deleted really - it only goes to lose credibility for MNHQ wrt campaigns.

TittyGolightly · 11/04/2018 15:06

When marketing really backfires! Grin

PeanutbutterBuns · 11/04/2018 15:07

We made the decision to launch with shoes aimed at boys, as our research shows that in general, boys tend to be more active and therefore get through shoes faster.

Did their research point out that it's because clothing and shoes are made for fashion and not fun that girls are most often told to not tuin their clothes and urged to sit down and not get dirty?

PeanutbutterBuns · 11/04/2018 15:08

uarantee is void if the shoe has in our reasonable opinion been abused or mishandled e.g. excessive water saturation beyond what is reasonably expected of schoolwear, damage through sharp objects, excessive dragging or use as brakes on bikes, skateboards or scooters.

Guessing the cmopany isnt based inthe UK then!?

No doubt they could EduCated.

I think i will get a pair for DS. He's a size 9 shoe destroyer about to go into secondary so price wise they're good value.

PeanutbutterBuns · 11/04/2018 15:32

I'm surprised that the marketing people didn't at least do 5 minutes of research before advertising here. They'd have known this was never going to go well.

As for MN I can't blame them it's a business and if anything they've given us an open ear to a company to tell them how they've got this wrong, and I know they know we would react in this exact way.

PeanutbutterBuns · 11/04/2018 15:33

So long as he does'nt get them wet or ride a scooter, skateboard or bike Dione

cropshe · 11/04/2018 15:38

It doesn't say anything about just getting them wet, the guarantee clearly states "excessive water saturation". I think if they refused to refund just for a bit of rain, they'd have trading standards after them Smile

I took the plunge and bought a pair for DS a few weeks ago. Still looking good and he loves them. Still hoping that I've found the holy grail because DS has been costing me a fortune!
