NUS Extra card - worthwhile?

balancingfigure · 07/01/2016 16:01

I've just started a job which apparently means I can get an NUS Extra card. Just wondered how much benefit I would get from it. It isn't very much to buy but my purse is bulging with loyalty cards and I don't want to add one if there is not much use.

Can anyone recommend good discounts?

I use mine all the time.
Co-op & new look mainly Blush

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 07/01/2016 16:25

Amazon. Half price Prime membership and % off books and most other stuff.

slicedfinger · 07/01/2016 16:25

Amazon give good discount on it, and Dr Martens!

TheDrsDocMartens · 07/01/2016 20:16

How did I forget Amazon! They do discount on books/clothes sometimes too.

balancingfigure · 07/01/2016 22:18

Amazon sounded great but you have to have a 'student Amazon ' account.

I downloaded the app and that gives lots more local offers so I think it will be worth it though

But you can get an Amazon student account with an nus extra card can't you?

Maladicta · 07/01/2016 22:21

Amazon and Coop - has paid for itself umpteen times over

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 07/01/2016 22:24

My coop won't let me use it. They reckon they're not part of the national coop. Even though it says coop on the shop!

TheMightyMing · 07/01/2016 22:25

Definitely! 10 per cent at co op saved me a bomb on Xmas booze plus everyday shopping. Top shop and lots of other high street stores. Pizza express 40 percent off total bill Monday and. Tuesday, twenty percent other times I think? I have just bought a three year one and I will be 48 by the time it expires :)

Can someone explain Amazon because I must have missed that one, what's a student account please? X

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 07/01/2016 22:33

You need a valid ac.uk email

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_201292790_joamst?nodeId=201292800

TheMightyMing · 07/01/2016 22:48

I don't have one of those but thanks anyway. I still get my money's worth regardless.

Also , my son has one as a sixth form student and he has been able to buy a cheap annual bus ticket in our area, which is saving us a fortune.

I live in S Manchester, once a year there is a big student discount week in the shopping centres with bigger discounts.

Joeperrysguitar · 07/01/2016 22:55

Definitely, can be used in loads of places - cinema, food (use once at Pizza Express at 40% off and that alone has nearly paid for the card!), clothes, Amazon, Superdrug, co-op, New Look, etc. Wouldn't be without it.

thatstoast · 07/01/2016 22:57

My top picks are Amazon, asos and dominoes

TheMightyMing · 07/01/2016 22:59

Forgot Superdrug! Of course! Great offers and 10% on top l though you have to get a free loyalty card to get the discount.

Forgot about the cinema!

Emochild · 07/01/2016 22:59

I use mine all the time at new look and super drug

No co-op locally unfortunately

balancingfigure · 08/01/2016 11:13

Thanks for that Amazon link, I hadn't seen that. I do have an ac.uk email so worth looking further. DH and I both use my current Amazon account, in fact he uses it more than me so would be fab if I can get it to work.

TheDrsDocMartens · 08/01/2016 11:39

There's a way round the.ac.uk email as I got mine before starting uni.

TheMightyMing · 08/01/2016 11:41

How ? I'd be very interested if you know how?

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 08/01/2016 12:28

Does pizza express still do student discount?

TheMightyMing · 08/01/2016 12:38

Yes!

rubyflipper · 08/01/2016 12:42

Absolutely! It's one of the few perks of working in further education.

My NUS card paid for itself within a few months.

If you work at an academic institution, you will have an ac.uk email address. You can use that to register for a student Amazon Prime account like my colleagues not me do.

And Spotify Premium only costs a fiver a month, rather than £10.

TheDrsDocMartens · 08/01/2016 17:58

Sorry, found it but it's no help to none students

TheMightyMing · 08/01/2016 18:41

I think I can do this! Thanks !
