Can I use money off vouchers at the supermarkets even if I don't buy the product on the voucher?

Does anyone know if I can use money off coupons at the supermarket if I don't buy the item the voucher relates to?

Eg if I have £1 off Fairy Liquid can I still use the voucher to get money off my shop even if I don't buy any Fairy?

it depends on the shop, and the assistant.
tesco used to take them as long as they sold the product, but have recently withdrawn this. I just hand the vouchers over, sometimes they take them without question, sometimes they say no you haven't brought the product. I asked and was told they changed the policy due to a newspaper publishing that they accepted the voucher regardless of the purchase.

Thanks chasingsquirrels - so sounds like Tesco won't take them, anyone know of other stores might?

I think it still works if you do it on the self service checkout.
