Newton Prep?

My neighbour said her son just received an offer from Newton Prep for reception. She seems very happy as if getting an offer from Highgate. Isn't Newton essentially open to all (who can pay)? I don't see why the happiness.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Why do you trawl through the Private School threads for the purpose of provoking a reaction from others? Are you that bored?

Knickerbockerglory75 · 15/10/2026 13:03

Newton Prep is academically selective, so your neighbour's child obviously met the criteria. What is your skin in the game?

javaprogrammer · 15/10/2026 18:49

@Knickerbockerglory75 No skin whatsoever in that school. I know that school is a massive school with loads of pupils in a location surrounded by highways. Never realised that school would attract enough families to select for its cohorts.

I don't have personal experience of Newton Prep, but they do have exceptional on-site facilities for a city-centre school, including floodlit all-weather pitches, a large auditorium, and multiple sports and dance halls. There's no need to bus children across town for sports or activities. They also seem to achieve strong academic results without hothousing, and their progressive, inclusive ethos appeals to many parents.

javaprogrammer · 15/10/2026 22:07

ok fine, but their 'strong' academic results are at best average for me

It's a prep school, not GCSEs or A levels! Assuming you send your kids to a mini hot house!

Most inner London prep schools are surrounded by 'highways'

javaprogrammer · 16/10/2026 13:13

@Westfacing that's true.

It’s a good school. Of course she’s happy to have an offer.

What’s making you sour about it?

javaprogrammer · 16/10/2026 20:25

Maybe I am just surprised people's threshold of happiness is so low.

OP posts:
Aaloyisha · 16/10/2026 21:04

Being happy that her kid is going to a good school is perfectly normal. It would be odd if she wasn’t.

javaprogrammer · 16/10/2026 23:32

well, good school or not, it is open to everyone who can pay.
I don't get happy being able to use a public toilet, however clean and beautiful it might be

OP posts:
KingscoteStaff · 17/10/2026 05:10

It’s over subscribed, so they select by academic potential - although the 4+ assessments all seem a bit odd to me.

But fair enough to be pleased at your child getting into a really good prep!

kwanzancherry · 17/10/2026 07:13

According to The Good Schools Guide, Reception at Newton Prep is four times oversubscribed. Your repeated assertion that it is open to anyone who can pay is false.

arlequin · 17/10/2026 08:04

Sorry OP this is such an unpleasant thread!
Newton Prep is a good school.
I was delighted that my son got a place at his state primary. Am I not allowed to be happy because he didn’t take an exam?

schools are so much more than exam factories

javaprogrammer · 17/10/2026 17:16

@kwanzancherry interesting, so there are 4x applications for an average-performing school charging £30k in a location surrounded by highways....

Can you present your evidence that it is average in terms of performance? My DS is not in one of the big hitters locally, but it is the right fit for him and we are payong for him to learn in a nicer emvironment than the local comp.

Also - highways - we call them roads/motorways or A roads in the UK..What are you expecting in London? The hanging gardens of Babylon?

CostcoFanofThree · 17/10/2026 18:21

It’s a primary school close to a stunning public park.

Exit results; schools parents choose to send their children to might have more to do with the families than the academic grades achieved.
I’ve not looked at their exit results over the past two years they use to be very very varied.

I'm glad you're not my neighbour. I'll leave it at that.

Cupofteaafterwards · 17/10/2026 22:59

Bottom line OP…can YOU afford to send your child there?

javaprogrammer · 18/10/2026 00:16

Thanks for all the comments. My view is confirmed.

OP posts:
arlequin · 18/10/2026 07:54

Which view?

tonystarksrighthand · 18/10/2026 08:07

I know what you mean OP how very dare she be happy and you rightly judge her, you are so right. Well done for judging her on her happiness. Go you

pickywatermelon · 18/10/2026 08:12

@javaprogrammer what is your actual point?
