Derby high (and others)

Hi all

I’ve started looking at private schools for a year 7 entry in September 2027.

Both my DS are academically very bright, they are also very sporty playing tennis for county.

We have looked at Denstone which DS1 loves. I don’t love the idea of the long days.

Weve visited and discounted abbotsholme and Derby grammar.

visiting Derby High and Lichfield cathedral next.

does anyone have any experience or views on these schools?

Depends how far you are willing to travel, as there is Nottingham all boys high school my sister went to the girls high school from what i can remember they have to take some sort of test to get in

Day option at Repton Prep and then Repton?
Give you mentioned they are very sporty and county level tennis players. Although, there is a big difference in the fees.

Whereabouts are you so you’re looking in quite a wide area? LOughborough High is very good and there are several bus routes from around Derby. I’m not sure what you mean about long days as depending on location that might apply to any of the schools? Repton’s days are more extended than Densine’s, for example.

We used a couple of these schools and Denstone was worth the money.

Denstone is a long day to 6pm ish. Derby High bus would be at bottom of my road at 4.20.

Derby High is excellent. Denstone is a very old, rooted in tradition type. Beautiful building and surroundings.

There aren’t any viable choices in terms of academic private schools near Derby. Derby high is popular not because they are good but due to lack of choices. I also recommend to look into Nottingham High (not GDST).

We visited denstone and loved it but I’m not sure if the traditional private education with the longer days is what DS would suit. It’s just so hard because we are in a part of the country where there aren’t many options.

Why did you discount Derby Grammar. Sorry, I am searching schools in Derby as my lil man will start nursery soon and I was looking at DGS over Dhs.__

I'd say it's definitely worth considering Trent College for a sporty child. They're not as academic as Nottingham High but still get good results-and they major on sports.

Discounted dgs as it seemed like a declining school. Tiny numbers and sport off site.

Agree about DGS seemingly not keeping up with the times. We're also looking at schools in the area (though for us it's primary entry) and I would agree that Trent is worth a look. Their facilities are spectacular.

I know there's no school coach route to you but there are local bus options if you transfer at Derby, so Id say do take a look at it - they even have a virtual 360 type tour on their website so you can get a sneak peak 😅

Hi! Just spotted you're another local primary person! We discounted DGS as it really seems like they've struggled for a while and that accepting girls is a last ditch attempt to rectify long-standing financial issues. Meanwhile DHS has accepted boys in some form for quite some time and the recent acceptance of boys to their senior unit seems to have really tipped the scales in their favour. Also: they get better results. They have better on-site facilities. They have more than twice the numbers of DGS. Even their lunch menu is substantially better!

We’ve visited DHS and loved it. DS is signed up to the y6 senior day in October. I’m really putting myself through the mill about this decision as we are in catchment for a long standing Ofsted outstanding secondary and have 2 DS to put through 5 years of secondary private (wouldn’t do sixth form private) and worrying about everything as I’m a single parent.
